Solid State Drive

In this article I am going to talk about Solid State Drive. I will also explain what is SSD and what are the uses of this drive .I will also cover the features that are involved in this drive.

A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a type of nonvolatile storage medium that stores persistent data in solid state flash memory. An SSD consists of two main components: a flash controller and NAND flash memory chips. The configuration of the SSD architecture is optimized to provide high read and write performance for sequential and random data requests. SSD are sometimes called flash disks. Unlike a hard disk (HDD), an SSD contains no moving parts that can be damaged. A conventional hard disk consists of a rotating disk with a read/ write head on a mechanical arm called an actuator. The hard disk mechanism and the hard disk are integrated into an integrated unit. Businesses and computer manufacturers have generally used turntables because of their lower unit cost and longer lifetime, although SSD are now commonplace on desktops and laptops. A rotating hard disk reads and writes data magnetically, one of the oldest storage media in continuous use. However, magnetic properties can lead to mechanical failures. Conversely, an SSD reads and writes data to a substrate of interconnected flash memory chips.

To avoid volatility, SSD manufacturers are developing devices with floating gate transistors to contain the electrical charge. This allows an SSD to retain the stored data even when it is not connected to a power source. Each floating gate transistors contains a single data bit, called one for a charged cell or 0 if the cell has no electrical charge. SSD is better than HDD. Here are some examples like SSD can reduce boot time from about 35 seconds to about 10 seconds. The writing speed of a hard disk can be between 50 and 120 Mbps, compared to 200-500 Mbps, for an SSD. A hard disk can perform between 50 and 200 I/O operations per second, while a comparable SSD can reach 90,000. In addition, some professional-grade rack-mount SSD claim to be able to handle millions of operations per second. Solid state drive offer faster storage and performance advantages than hard drives. Companies that increasingly need higher I/O have driven the development and adoption of SSD. Because it has lower latency than hard disks, they can effectively handle heavy reads and random workloads. This lower latency results from the ability of an SSD flash to read data directly and immediately from a particular location in the SSD flash cell.

A 100% Flash Bay requires only SSD as storage. A hybrid flash bay combines disk space and SSD with flash memory, used to cache hot data that will then be written to a disk or tape. In server-side flash configurations, SSD are installed on computers to support targeted workloads, sometimes in conjunction with network storage. servers, laptops, desktops, or high-performance applications that need to provide real-time or near real time information can benefit from this technology. With these features, enterprise it is ideal for offloading transactional database transactions, avoiding booting with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), or within a storage array for local storage of data. Hot for off-site storage in a hybrid cloud Scenario.

Solid state drive are used in a number of consumer devices, including computer games, digital cameras, digital music players, laptops, personal computers, smartphones, tablets and USB sticks. These devices are not designed to provide the same performance and durability as a corporate SSD. This drive offer faster storage and performance advantages than hard drives. Since no moving parts are used, an SSD is not subject to the mechanical failure that occurs with the hard drives. It is also quieter and uses less power than its hard drive counterpart and because SSD weighs less than hard drives, they are good for laptops and mobile computing devices. In addition, the SSD controller software includes predictive analytics that warns a user of a potential drive failure. Because flash memory is flexible, all flash array vendors can change usable storage capacity using data reduction techniques.
