Everything you need to know about head lice

Head lice can be a bigger problem than you thought. Here’s what you need to know.

It’s not serious but…

Head lice isn’t a serious disease, so you can breathe a sigh of relief. However, it can be incredibly itchy. That discomfort can make your life or your child’s life difficult in more ways than one.

You can get it

If your child has lice, then you’ll likely get it as well, the WebMD says. Close contact makes it possible for the lice to spread. That’s why kids who go to school are highly susceptible to getting lice. Any situation that allows for hair-to-hair contact can give you and your child higher risk of getting head lice.

You can use a comb

One of the simplest and most popular ways of dealing with head lice is by using a wet comb. Applying conditioner to the hair beforehand can also make it easier. If you want to try using the comb, start from the top of the head downward, The Guardian says. Look carefully until you see nits and signs of the lice on the hair strands.

You’ll want fast results

To get rid of the infestation, you’re going to need to research options for head lice treatment. Don’t rely on shampoos and over-the-counter solutions since they may come with harmful effects. Old-school remedies may not work very well either and can leave your child with an even worse infestation. While you can certainly use a wet fine-toothed comb to get the lice out, that’s going to take weeks. If you don’t want to leave your child with an itchy head for that long, then head to a salon for professional head lice treatment. You get faster results when you have pros to handle the problem.

You’ll need to clean up

Going to a professional can help you get rid of the lice. But they can’t make them go away completely. That’s where you come in. To put an end to the infestation, you’ll need to wash all the clothing your child has worn in the last 48 hours. Put them in hot water to kill off any surviving lice. You should also put in your child’s favorite plush toy in a hot dryer. Keep it there for 30 minutes. That should be enough to kill off these annoying blood-sucking insects.

And if it doesn’t stop?

If your child keeps getting lice, then he may be getting it from someone he comes in close contact with. If it’s not coming from anyone in the family, then he must be getting it from school. It may be a good idea to reach out to the parents of your child’s classmates and encourage them to check their child for lice. That can help put a stop to your child’s itchy head problems once and for all.

If your child has lice, start looking for effective ways to deal with the infestation. Look for a salon that can handle lice treatments to give your child relief from the discomfort.
