For those living in tropical regions, air conditioner is a must have. However, buying one can seem like a tricky situation, especially if you do not have a good idea about the technicalities involved and about their types.

So, to guide you in this direction, mentioned below are a few common types of air conditioners and how they differ from each other.

Central air conditioners

Central air conditioning systems are meant for large living spaces as they can cool several rooms all at once. The system involves a cooling compressor that’s placed outside the house. It is also the piece that cools the air. A coil containing refrigerant for cooling the air is blown by a fan and the cool air is then distributed all over the house with the help of the established ductwork.

These supply and return ducts work to circulate the cool air throughout the house, while the warm air is carried back through the return system and pushed outside the house via an exhaust system.

Ducted air conditioner

Ducted air conditioning is more common in corporate settings, office spaces, shopping centers and other similar large areas, but now people have even begun installing them at homes. Ducted air conditioning includes a central location wherein the air is treated. The air is then distributed through a system of ducts into each room.  Ducted air conditioning is best known for keeping large spaces at a uniform temperature. For installation, ducted air conditioners require ducting throughout the whole space, with vents being installed in each room and the central unit outside.

Packaged air conditioner

Packaged air conditioners, also recognized as packaged terminal air conditioners or PTACs, are the types of air conditioners that are also generally found in commercial spaces such as hotels or hospitals. Packaged air conditioners are often installed right above the floors and below a window. On the other side of the wall, hidden from sight is its exhaust system that sends warm air out of the building. Despite being commonly preferred in commercial establishments, packaged air conditioners are also viable for residential use.  The price of packaged air conditionersis generally less and they are easy to install too.

While each of the above mentioned systems does the same work, there are various significant differences in their functioning. So whatever you prefer to choose it is vital that you weigh each aspect, such as function, cost, installation, maintenance and so on before you arrive at your final decision.
