When it comes to taking great photos, even the smallest thing matters. A basic photography equipment can also make a huge difference. Photography enthusiasts often get confused between quick release clamps for cameras. One of the most commonly asked questions is - What is better- a clamp with a knob or a clamp with a lever? Well, both types have their own advantages and disadvantages. A knob is simpler, lighter, and has less moving parts. It also has more clamping force than a lever clamp. The reason behind it is most quick release lever clamps use a spring to transmit the clamping force to the quick release camera plate. On the other hand, a knob transmits the same force directly. This is generally an issue with most large telephoto lenses.

Now as we have understood how the two types work, it’s time to compare them on the basis of ease of use and speed. Knobs are relatively easier to use. Levers, on the other hand, do take a little more force to close. but the motion is very simple. So, it is basically a matter of personal choice- whether you like twisting a knob or flipping a lever. If you are looking for ease, go for knobs. If speed is your biggest priority, levers are a better choice to improve photography. One of the various advantages of using a lever is that you do not lose nits if you accidentally rub or bump it into something. You have to depress lock in order to open the lever. If you are someone who often makes adjustments to the camera position, a knob will make it easier for you to just barely loosen thequick release clamp and slide it over 1 mm or so. Many lever clamps have a very narrow clamping range, so you can go for a clamp that is adjustable and fits virtually all Swiss style plates and offers you peace of mind. If you are going to make minute adjustments to your camera’s position or want to shoot with large telephone lenses, then a knob will better suit your requirements.

So these were some of the advantages and disadvantages of using a knob Vs. lever style quick release clamps. When shopping for clamps, do take the above-mentioned points into consideration, in order to choose wisely and make your job easier. Use the right components and improve photography!
