Nickel hard cast iron is commonly used in housings, gearboxes or machine tools and has a hardness of approximately 150 to 200 Brinell. By adding alloying elements, usually chromium, nickel or copper, the hardness can be increased to over 700 Brinell hardness. This allows the use of cast iron to begin to enter areas where wear resistance is critical.
