Personal statement

My inclination towards Finance began at a tender age.  Naturally, I am a person who loves solving problems. I realized my abilities to think intuitively, creatively and strive for perfection while doing things my own way.  In fact, most of my decisions have been made using logical analysis.  I found money and investments to be interesting and knew that a finance career would be the right one for me. The quantitative approach that finance provides impressed me. This has seen me work at different finance or investment organizations to provide services to enhance my skills especially after completing high school. Here I gained invaluable experience from working with professionals.

Of more importance is that I got a clear direction of what I wanted to do.  While it felt fulfilling to finally engage with professionals in my field of choice, I felt that it was not enough and I needed to do more, something that would mark the beginning of my career. Studying finance would allow me to solve problems on a daily basis from determining the best finance solution to negotiating a deal.  The career would also allow me to be creative in dealing with complex solutions that do not require a technical understanding of the issue. This means that I had to join college for my undergraduate studies. After completion, I proceeded to acquire my Masters in Finance.

Learning has provided me with a sense of accomplishments and a world of satisfaction. The more I learn, the more I feel fulfilled. Whether at school or at work, the challenge for learning motivates me. Initially, I took my current job since I identified an invaluable opportunity to improve my learning experience. Over the years, I have accumulated a good knowledge of Finance. Nearly all my work revolves around finance. I long for an environment where I can further my learning experience. A doctoral program Edinburgh University will definitely provide me with such an environment and allow me to continue my quest for knowledge.

My desire to enroll into a Ph.D. program also stems from a realization that my undergraduate and Masters’ education was only a starting point in learning important finance skills. While the education supplied the foundation of knowledge for the field and my employment background has allowed me to understand and exploit technical aspects of finance, I feel the need to learn other critical skills. Specialization through the Ph.D. program is critical for me. My time in undergraduate and Masters’ schooling has influenced my decision to pursue Ph.D.  I consider myself fortunate enough to have found exhilarating joy in carrying out research.

Edinburgh University could contribute tremendously to my achieving my long-term objective. Needless to say, it has a strong academic reputation and an impressive faculty. In particular, I am interested in the work and supervision of Dr. Ben Sila. Due to his research interest in corporate finance and corporate governance, Edinburgh University’s international reputation of the department attracts a variety of students with similar interest.  I believe that it will be a stimulating environment in which to study my doctorate level.  By studying at Edinburgh University, it will be able to work closely, exchange ideas and share experiences with a person I consider my mentor due to his work and interest in corporate finance.  In addition, your University also provides excellent facilities for students with different career choices. I will also use my Doctorate as leverage to attain my goals and make an important contribution to the field of Finance.
