Neverwinter may just be an incredibly successful MMO

The Neverwinter PvP arena is one aspect of the game that may leave many players underwhelmed. Those who are hoping for epic battles of large teams fighting against each other will be sorely disappointed. Instead, players are greeted with only one game type, Domination, which pits two teams of five players against each other in an effort to capture and control three flags on a small map. That’s it. No deathmatch, no capture the flag, just Domination over and over. Sure, players gain XP from the PvP arena that levels up their character, but the desire for XP from Domination quickly fades as the game mode becomes stale.

Additionally, despite its efforts to balance the game by setting all players to the same level, Domination still favors certain classes. For instance, those playing as heavy weapon fighters can be quickly taken down by the magic and tricks of other players, leaving those fighters hopelessly unable to support their team. On the other hand, those who play as a Rogue class will discover they have an advantage over the enemy due to their ability to quickly dart behind players and slash them, and go invisible when they get in trouble. Rather than juggling dozens of different abilities among several hotkey bars, Neverwinter‘s controls are at most spread across eight to nine actions. The left and mouse buttons control “at-will” powers that can be used continuously, while three to four keys are mapped to those on cooldowns. Two daily powers can also be equipped, but unlike their pen and paper counterparts these devastating attacks can be unleashed after building up a meter by dealing damage. Aided by the ability to avoid enemy strikes through dodges, teleports or shield raises depending on the class, Neverwinter has very active mechanics. It engages me in the action instead of forcing me to stand still or look away from combat to focus on the too many cooldowns on too many bars that plague other MMOs.

Neverwinter is not a perfect game, but it is definitely above average. With graphics that work on most machines and look great on high end machines, and decent gameplay, Neverwinter is surprisingly a breath of fresh air in an fairly stale genre. It’s future depends solely on how Cryptic intends to support the game and community. So far they’ve done a good job by releasing a massive balance patch rather quickly and they plan to release a bit of end game PvP/PvE in the form of a new even known as The Caverns of Gauntlgrym. If they’re able to keep it up, Neverwinter may just be an incredibly successful MMO.
