Features, applications and pros and cons of Universal Joint Cross bearings

Posted by cardanshafts on June 5th, 2019

A Universal Joint cross bearing is a mechanical connection between two intersecting rotating shafts which are not generally parallel. They are made up of alloy steel and are specifically prepared for heavy duty applications. In this article some of the features and applications of universal joints are discussed, have a look at these.

Features:

The Universal Joint shaft manufacturers make sure that the joints are made up of superior quality materials and the finest needles so as to ensure the longevity of the joints. Some of the essential features are discussed hereunder.

The foremost feature of Universal cross bearings is the non-uniformity of transmission of motion throughout the joints. The ratio of angular velocity between the outer and the innermost shafts varies cyclically at 2 cycle at each revolution of the innermost shaft. This fluctuation increases as the operating angle increases and can reach up to a peak of 15% of the angular velocity.

However, this non uniformity of the motion transmission can be eliminated by placing 2 Universal joints in series. The variation of velocity that is induced by the joint can be counteracted by the velocity variation of the other thereby maintaining the ratio of angular velocity 1:1 between the shafts. However, the velocity ratio of the intermediate shafts cannot be avoided.

Applications:

The various applications are discussed hereunder, have a look below.

Heavy duty applications

Universal Joint cross bearings are typically used in aircrafts, control mechanisms, instrumentations, electronics, optical and mechanical devices, radio, ordnance, sewing machines, tool dries and textile machinery to name a few.

Light duty applications

The Universal Joint cross bearings are generally available in alloy steel which has a myriad of applications. The Universal joints that are made up of alloy steel has the maximum capacity for carrying heavy loads for a specific size. On the contrary the Universal joints that are made up of thermoplastic also has a wide range of applications in the light Industries. The self-lubricating feature of the thermo plastic joints, its light weight, corrosion resistance, negligible backlash, and the capability to perform at a very high-speed work to its advantages.

Special construction applications

The Universal Joint shaft manufacturers also manufactures Universal joints meant for special construction purposes. These are used for carrying larger torques and in areas that need a high-speed performance. Both standard size as well as miniature joints are available to meet the specific purposes of construction.

Pros and cons of Universal joint bearings:

Universal joint bearings have the following pros and cons, read below to know more.

Pros

- Bearings have a low side buoyancy
- It is possible to get large angular displacements
- Capacity for high torque

Cons

- the fluctuations in acceleration and velocity increases with the increase in the operating angle.
- Regular lubrication is mandatory to prevent wear and tear
- It is difficult to control the backlash.

In case you need the cross joints, you should mention the model number of the shaft and the series page in order to get the correct order placed that will serve your purpose.
