How To Fix Water Leaks Before Waterproofing Basement Wall Panels

Water leaks can occur anywhere in your home and can be caused by many reasons. Water leaks in your basement wall panels can be a very annoying issue. If left unfixed, they can damage the structure of the building, as well as the furniture and appliances inside your home. They can also promote the growth of mold and mildew, which can lead to the occurrence of many health problems such as lung problems, respiratory failures, asthma, headache, sleeping difficulty, fatigue, and many more diseases which more likely to occur if you have allergy tendencies, an underlying lung disease, and weak immune system.To stop the leaks and the problems that ensue, you should waterproof the wall panels of your basement properly. Prior to waterproofing the basement walls with water-resistant materials such as waterproofing paint and tar, you need to get rid of any excess water. Here are some tips on how to fix water leaks in the basement:1. First and foremost, you need to find out where the leaks are coming from. To find out whether the water on your walls panels comes from outside or inside of the basement, tightly seal a part of the wall which tends to be damp with a sheet of aluminum foil (approximately 12" x 12"). Leave the foil there for a day or two. If you find water on the side of the foil which was against the wall, it means that the water comes from the outside of the basement. On the other hand, if the outside of the foil is wet, then the problem comes from within the basement.2. Exposed basement window wells allow water to seep in through the window frames during heavy rain. You can protect the windows with metal window wells with gravels in the bottom to provide good drainage.3. Plumbing leaks can also increase the humidity level inside the basement. Therefore, you should repair your plumbing immediately if there is any leakage. When you have finished repairing, you can air out the basement by opening all the windows and using fans, or use a dehumidifier to get rid of the humidity.4. Damaged downspout or gutter can cause roof water to puddle around the basement walls and seep through the pores and cracks in the masonry. Repair the broken downspout or replace it with a new one. Protect the downspout from debris to avoid clogging. If the gutter is clogged, or if you don't have one, you need to make a new gutter or install a screen to filter fallen leaves, broken twigs, dirt, or small pebbles.
