4 Indian Architects Who have Designed Masterpieces

Architecture is about bringing a creative dream into reality. Today, as we pause to turn around in the busy streets of the Capital, we can witness magnificent architectures that leave us in awe. Not just New Delhi, every developed corner of this world has redefined the way buildings, structures and even schools have been designed in traditional times. Considering the scope and growth of this professional, more and more students are enrolling for architecture. Before you land up your first project, here are 4 Indian architects who have raised the bar for other aspiring architects:

Charles Mark Correa: This man needs no formal introduction. Charles has been the creative mind behind many popular structures including Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, National Crafts Museum in New Delhi, City Center in Kolkata, McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT (Boston). He embarked on his architecture journey with the project named ‘Mahatma Gandhi Sangrahalaya’ in Ahmedabad. Charles has been honoured with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in addition to the Padma Shri. Moreover, his work has also been acknowledged by the Royal Institute of British Architects. He is an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. After obtaining his bachelor’s, Charles joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Rajiv Saini: This young architect is widely known for his distinctive designs. His work is the perfect epitome of modern and traditional art. Rajiv Saini claims to be a self-made architect. If you have been to the City of Lakes, then you might have been to Devigarh Palace? Yes, the same royal design that has attracted many international awards including the Conde-Nast Best Design Hotel. Also, the designing of the lavish Marriott Hotel in Goa is ranked as one of his top works. Rajiv has managed to leave his mark in abroad as well.

Raj Rewal: Raj Rewal follows a unique designing approach. He attempts to address the rapidly growing urbanization, the climate demands, and traditions and cultures. Raj Rewal has been rewarded with many recognitions such as Institution of Engineers (India)’s Lifetime achievement award, Architect of the Year, Robert Mathew Award by the Commonwealth Association of Architects as well as Great Master’s Award. Additionally, he has also been appreciated by the French Government through their Chevalier des Arts des Lettres. He has been the creator of multiple kinds of buildings that are even looked upon by top architects in Delhi NCR.  To name a few, the Nehru Pavilion, the World Bank complex, Indian National Science Academy, Hall of Nations in Pragati Maidan and Visual Art Campus in Rohtak have brought him great fame and name.

Brinda Somaya: Brinda Somaya gained the title of ‘Andrew Dickson White Professor-at-Large in the year 2017 at Cornell University. She works with a ‘conservation’ philosophy. According to her, development and progress must not be carried out at the risk of environmental disruption. Brinda holds a bachelor’s in Architecture from Mumbai University and Master’s in Arts from Smith College, Northampton, United States. Moreover, she holds membership of Editorial Board for MARG Architectural Books, Committee Impact Assessment of New Construction Projects and New Industrial Estates for Environment & Forests’ Government of India. IIT, Mumbai is one of the masterpieces designed by this lady.
