‘Be More Chill’ has managed to win the hearts of the teens through its expanding background music and video game like adaption. Its previews began this year on 13th February and it was officially opened on 10th March. With a film adaptation still in progress, the production has a lot of pressure building up.

Based on a novel with the same name by Ned Vizzini, the production received music and lyrics by Joe Iconis and a book by Joe Tracz. The musical follows a nerdy teenager Jeremy, who is like in case of most nerds, a social outcast. Then one day he receives a pill called ‘Squip’ from one of his classmates that is supposed will make him more chill. With a little help from Squip Jeremy is on his way to get the girl of his dreams ‘Christine’. Everything was going fine until he starts losing himself and along with Michael’s friendship.

The musical was a massive hit at its initial run at Two River Theater, New Jersey in 2015. After which it took off to off-Broadway production in 2018. Going strong since then the musical has become an internet sensation owing to its electro-pop soundtrack. The music is considerably appreciated as it hit over 200 million streams, became a favorite fan-art on Tumblr, lured in commercial producers and was even sold out last summer in its off-Broadway premiere. The show is especially popular among tweens, most of them were camping outside before the show.

Regardless of ‘Be More Chill’ being popular with teens and tweens, the show isn’t just for them. During its Off-Broadway run, there was audience constituting of people of all ages. Well, that’s a given because of the catchy tunes and melodies of this marvelous Musical.

Watch Will Roland (Best Leading Actor in a Musical winner) as Jeremy, George Salazar (Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical award winner) as Michael and Stephanie Hsu (Favorite Featured Actress in a Musical winner) as Christine as Jeremy sets on a journey to leave his loser self behind. It all starts with a pill named Squip but all the dreams to become cooler actually backfires. Hold on to your seats if you don’t want to miss this thrilling show. And if in case you don’t have your seats booked yet, buy Cheapest Be More Chill Tickets now!

The musical got tons of songs and lyrics that make you think ‘I’ve heard this somewhere’. I’m sure anyone with hits like “Rock Lobster and “Cars” in their memories of coming of age will understand what I mean. The speedy “More Than Survive” can easily be considered as one from the 1960s British Invasion or the 1970s Ramones’ invasion of C.B.G.B. and you can say that the Katlyn Carlson, Tiffany Mann and Lauren Marcus’ boisterous “The Smartphone Hour (Rich Set a Fire)” is somewhat of a tribute to the 1960’s “Bye Bye Birdie’s” hit “The Telephone Hour” by composer Charles Strause. Then there is the all when known story of unrequited love, the fight for the heroine, troubled loved ones and a mind-controlling evil dude.

Despite all that it is still worth watching. Though I can’t say it’s a children’s musical with it promoting drugs and promiscuity even if it’s in a joking manner. Interested to see the show live? Get Be More Chill Tickets at Tickets4Musical.

It seems there have been a few changes in the Broadway version, like a few scenes with first Squip abuser, Rich (Gerard Canonico), Jason’s father, Mr. Heere (Jason SweetTooth Williams, who actually played several roles in the musical) have been cut. Also, some relationship between Jeremy and Michael clips have also seemed to have reduced. But I’ll say it is for better, due to these changes ‘Be More Chill’ seems a bit more even and smooth. While the Off-Broadway version was a bit clumsy, rapid and peculiar the Broadway version feels more matured and to the point. Irrespective of it being rushed or relaxed, “Be More Chill” remains the favorite of teens and adults alike.
