One highlight is a 1966 painting titled “Cloud Over The Mountains” created by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), which is considered an excellent example of his works in his later years.

Zhang is widely seen as one of the best-known and most prodigious Chinese artists of the 20th century.

His prolific career spanned in Argentina, Brazil, the United States and China.

Born into a family of artists in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, Zhang studied textile-dyeing in Kyoto, Japan.

From 1941 to 1944, he went to Dunhuang in Gansu Province to make replica paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas.

He copied nearly 276 murals and founded a new school of painting based on ancient Buddhist art.

After a successful painting career in Shanghai, Zhang left the Chinese mainland in 1949. He went on a period of extensive travels, working and living in various places such as Argentina, Brazil and the US, before he finally settled down in Taiwan in 1978.

His deteriorating eyesight led him to take up an increasingly bold, expressive style. In the 1960s, Zhang became known as a guiding figure in modern impressionism.

This painting was created by Zhang in 1966 in Brazil. It was said that Zhang suffered from gallstones for years, but refused to have surgery. Instead, he took herbal medicine to reduce the pain.

The painting was sent as a gift by him to one of his friends in Taiwan, because the master was so happy on the day when he knew the gallstones were gone on their own with no treatment.
