If you're lucky, you're making plans go to Maui. Not only is Maui one of the most beautiful places on Earth, there are a ton of things to do once you get there. First of all, Maui is a bigger island than most people think. While hanging out by the resort is certainly a good way to spend your time, you're missing a lot if you don't make an effort to see this stunning island. Here are five great experiences you must have in Maui to get you started.

1. Go to a Luau

Some people believe luaus are just for tourists. Well, if you're a tourist, there's nothing wrong with that. However, there's more to a luau than people think. It's a great way to dip your toes into Polynesian culture. You'll learn about the island's traditions and dances, enjoy some wonderful music and extraordinary food. It really doesn't get much better than that.

2. Explore the Upcountry

There's more to Maui than just a tropical paradise. In fact, the volcano that makes up the eastern 75% of the island (Haleakalā) rises to an altitude of over 10,000 feet. Known to the locals as "upcountry", a drive up to the top of the island means rising across 17 different climate zones spread across gorgeous countryside, so that by the time you've reached the crater, temperatures on this tropical island can drop into the 40s.

3. The Road to Hana

A drive along the edge of Haleakalā, this drive offers stunning views of tropical forest, waterfalls, and black sand beaches. One of the best ways to experience The Road to Hana is by hiring a private tour. Maui has professional tour guides who know the road like the back of their hand, and can fill you in on the area's natural and human history.

4. Molikini Crater

A tiny semi-exposed volcanic crater off the southwest coast of Maui, Molikini Crater is a world class diving and snorkeling destination. Taking a boat trip to the island will get you access to its amazing coral reefs, and if you go from January through April, you're likely to see some humpback whales as well.

5. Helicopter Tour

Many of the most beautiful parts of Maui are simply inaccessible to anything accept a helicopter. If you want to see an endless array of steep canyons and majestic waterfalls, a helicopter tour is the only way to go.

The best part is, after you've taken your helicopter, snorkeling, and private tours, Maui still has miles of white sand beaches, providing you ample opportunities for relaxing afterwards.
