4 Mistakes You Should Avoid Making When On The Paleo Diet

Posted by michaelchristiana on July 2nd, 2019

Low-carb diets have become extremely popular lately, and Paleo is no exception. This diet, as the name suggests, requires consumption of foods that were available in the Paleolithic era. It eliminates sugars, dairy, alcohol, processed foods and grains - basically anything that our cave-dwelling ancestors didn’t have access to is a strict no-no. So, if you are comfortable with adopting a caveman lifestyle to lose weight, this diet is perfect for you. However, you will have access to Paleo-approved tasty alternatives like low carb mug cakes and pineapple fried rice that will satisfy your cravings, without the guilt.

As with any diet, there are some mistakes that you need to avoid when going Paleo. Here are some of them:

Eating too much meat

Even though Paleo suggests eating grass-fed meats, it is not exactly healthy to include meat in every meal, which is what some people do. You should treat meat more as an accompaniment than a main, because consuming 8 or 9 ounces of meat everyday is a bit too much. It can have a negative impact on your liver and kidneys.

Relying on packaged food

The market is flooded with packaged foods that carry labels like Paleo, organic and gluten-free to make you think that they aid in weight loss. However, you could be harming yourself and sabotaging your diet by relying on these packaged foods. Many Paleo-friendly food products are high in carbs, which makes you retain water, which, in turn, can sabotage your diet.

Skimping on vegetables

Even though Paleo is a meat-heavy diet, you should not skimp on your veggies. You should fill at least one-third of your plate with paleo-friendly veggies like broccoli and carrots. This is important because veggies that are low on calorie usually fill you up with fiber, which keeps your digestion on track, thus limiting your snacking tendencies.

Cutting back on carbs drastically

Even though the main component of Paleo is to cut back on carbs, it is not necessary for you to go too extreme. The tendency of most people on this diet is to go high-protein and low-carb; however, what you need to remember that low carb intake is not healthy for everyone. It is important to not follow the rules in an extremely strict manner. Keep your Paleo diet as balanced as possible.

To avoid these Paleo mistakes, you should consume balanced meals of the approved food items and try to avoid packaged foods as much as you can.
