Seed Drying and Storage

SEED DRYING AND STORAGE

The seed storage is usually in cold storage. The effectiveness of drying is the key to prolong storage life. Most seed-bearing plants will consider the room design with humidity control system which can make seeds tolerate the temperature; reduce the likelihood of germination, attacks by pathogens, insect infestation, discolouring and loss of freshness.
15 percent equilibrium relative humidity is the ideal level for Seed drying, the control of which normally should be carried out within 24 hours of harvesting. There are many seed drying methods including incubator drying, drying cabinets, desiccant drying and charcoal drying. With moderate quantities, you can install a dehumidified drying cabinet, which can reduce the moisture content to a safe level for sealed storage. And a dry room equipped with a desiccant dehumidifier is the most appropriate drying method for drying large quantities of seeds. The benefits of a desiccant dehumidifier are the portability to move it around the room and its ability to operate efficiently in cool conditions.
