As with most things, maintaining the right humidity is a balancing act, and — in this case –  a balancing act that is critical to your health. So what can you do to protect yourself and your family? Here a few ideas.

You can fight existing mold by cleaning; many people use specialized cleaners for this, but others find detergent works just as well. If the area to be cleaned is larger than 10 square feet, consider hiring a professional to handle the job.

Check your heating/ventilation/air conditioning system and be sure that it is cleaned regularly. Repair plumbing leaks and fixes any other water problems you may have. Avoid dust-gathering clutter that can hide mold while it gets a foothold.  And check porous materials like carpet and ceiling tiles. And last but not least, wherever possible prevent mold.
