What Is Texture In Interior Design

Everything in the home has a ‘texture’ but when interior designers say they add texture to a room they mean that piece that stand out and have a tactile quality AGAINST another texture that isn’t the same. (So stay away from those custom matching throw pillows of the same material as your couch) Texture comes from a variety of sources from soft fabrics, to harder materials like wood and stone and everything in-between. Its about mixing and not being just one dimensional.

Get The Basics Right

The easiest and least expensive way to add texture to a home is through pieces that are usually smaller items like cushions and throws which can be easily moved around or replaced if you want a quick interior update. Cushions can make a big impact when displayed together and one of the most on-trend textures of the moment is animal fur or faux fur and thick natural woven macramé type cushions. Smooth silk or fluffy, these textures add instant dimension to the overall design and draw the eye wherever placed.

Rugs are the simplest texture creators. Thick fluffy rugs add texture but so do short shiny smooth, woven or knitted rugs. Playing with different textures will also create an intriguing contrast. For example, combine plain silk cushions with sequin or embroidered. Or a thick natural rope type versions, in different size or shapes even.

Perfect Layering Skills

Adding texture is all about layering. To really get the interior designer look you should combine multiple textural elements to bring the space to life. One of the best ways to layer textures is to start with larger textural pieces, for example a velvet chair or an exposed wooden table. Then add smaller accessories and soft furnishings such as that throw pillow in a different texture then the velvet chair. A great way to achieve this is to try multiple textures together before deciding what works best for you and your overall decorating style. Best Interior Designers Kelowna

You may like that wood table with the velvet chair or you might like a chrome and glass table with that chair.

Texture doesn’t just have to come from what we place in a room, it can come from the room itself. Textured wall and floor finishes are things we think about as interior designers before even thinking about furnishings and accessories. Marble tiles, textured wallpaper, crown molding, concrete or wood flooring. These are some examples that add interest to any room. Plants, either real or artificial, are also a fantastic and unexpected way to add texture to a space and that can be in art as well.
