Sydney Naturopath, Joanne Kennedy discusses the importance of having balanced hormones for women’s overall health.

 What is Hormonal Imbalance?

Hormonal imbalance occurs when a women’s hormones become either too high or too low in relation to each other.  It is the disruption to this relationship between hormones that causes many of the health issues women face.  In a healthy menstrual cycle, oestrogen climbs from day 1 to day 14 when ovulation occurs. Once ovulation occurs, progesterone is produced to counterbalance the effects of oestrogen. When this not occur properly, hormonal imbalance is the result.

What Happens When Women Face Hormone Imbalance Sydney?

As a result of hormonal imbalance, a woman has to face a lot of challenges like weight gain, acne, painful breasts, migraine, and loss of libido, burn-outs, and severe mood swings. These symptoms are often classified as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) or when more severe, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).  PMDD is not only due to hormonal imbalance but also MTHFR and methylation cycle issues and methylation is required to detoxify hormones and balance neurotransmitters.

The other thing that can happen when Women’s Hormones Sydney are out of balance, is that women produce more of the male hormone testosterone.  When this occurs that can develop a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), whereby there is failure to ovulate, therefore failure to produce progesterone.  This condition is also caused by an excess of blood glucose and insulin resistance or chronic inflammation in the body.

 How to treat hormonal imbalance

Some of the key treatments for hormonal imbalance include reducing overall inflammation and oxidative stress in the body as this leads to poor quality oestrogens, follicles and receptors.  Some of the best supplements to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress include magnesium, selenium, zinc, n-acetyl-cysteine, glutathione and turmeric.

To support ovulation, herbal medicine is very important. Key herbs for ovulation support include peony, liquorice, tribulus and vitex.  Zinc is key nutrient to trigger luteinizing hormone that is needed for ovulation.  Key nutrients for progesterone production include iron, zinc, vitamin B, iodine, selenium and Vitamin D.

Since all hormones are made with cholesterol and other fats, it’s important that you consume of variety of fat in your diet including saturated fats from animal protein and coconut oil, omega 3 fatty acids from fish, and monounsaturated fats form olive oil, nuts and seeds and avocado. If you do not consume adequate fats, it’s important to take a Omega 3,6,9 supplement.

Those with MTHFR may require MTHFR Treatment Skype to assist with hormonal imbalance to ensure methylation is working correctly to support Phase 2 liver detoxification of oestrogen.  Key nutrients form MTHFR and Methylation include folate, vitamin B12, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, zinc and choline.
