Suffering from substance abuse?

Substance abuse is when you take drugs illegally. Like when you use alcohol, prescription medicine, and other legal substances in too much quantity or in the wrong way. Addiction differs from substance abuse. People with substance abuse problems can be able to quit or can change their unhealthy habit while people with addictions are unable to do so. In the United States, deaths due to suicide and unintentional overdose pose a major, and growing public health concern.

Opioid abuse and addiction: Taking drugs not according to the provider’s instructions is drug abuse or can be known as Opioid abuse. Which means, you are using them for other purposes such as getting high, or you are taking unprescribed opioids. Addiction is a chronic brain disease. In addiction people impulsively seek out drugs even though it may cause harm to you. Opioid addiction, overdose and deaths: It is found that prescription opioid misuse, including prescription monitoring programs, may have an impact on the number of opioid deaths in the future. The deaths of Americans due to an overdose of opioid overdose has increased more than 250% since 2000. It is estimated that more than 40% of suicide and overdose deaths were known to have involved opioids overdose, and rates are likely higher due to unrecorded opioid involvement. The problems of death due to opioid overdose continue to worsen and now become the most serious public health issues among Americans.

Drugs having Opioid addiction potential:

Fentanyl, codeine, morphine heroin, Oxycodone and Hydrocodone. Long-term use of these drugs have a high risk of addiction.

Reasons for the increase in intentional and unintentional opioid overdose:

There are many reasons for opioid abuse and addiction, which leads to suicide and unintentional overdose like pain, increased prescribing and availability of opioids, and socioeconomic stress. Pain and Risk of Suicide and Overdose: As you know pain causes alterations in the neurocircuitry and pain are also associated with opioid overdose, but in contrast to suicide, the limited analyses available suggest that this association is mediated by the number of opioids prescribed.

Links among opiate abuse, suicide and unintentional overdose:

The link between suicide and overdose evolves by considering intentional overdoses, one type of suicide. There is some evidence that intentionality of overdose events is dimensional, rather than categorical, and both fatal and nonfatal events may not be fully intentional or unintentional. The rates of suicide and unintentional overdose have climbed during the last few years. Opioid addiction plays a critical role in fueling both of these public health problems. Preventing suicide or overdose among those at high risk of opioid addiction:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy.
  • Counselling and pharmacotherapy
  • Treatment for mental health conditions
  • Motivational interviews
  • Improved access to medication-assisted treatment.

Opioid addiction treatment:

Opiate addiction treatment can fully help the people to stop using or misusing prescription pain medications or opioids such as heroin and fentanyl. Treatments for opioid abuse and opioid addiction: Treatments options for opioid abuse and addiction may include  Medicines  Counselling and behavioural therapies  Medication-assisted therapy  Residential and hospital-based treatment

Medicines used to treat opioid abuse and opioid addiction:

Generally, medicines used to treat opioid abuse and addiction are methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone.
