Mental Health Awareness Month: Promoting Good Mental Health & Well-Being

Posted by williamjack on July 17th, 2019

Did you know 1 out of every 5 adults in the US suffers from a mental health condition? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), among the most common mental health conditions lies stress, which is believed to be the major reason of premature deaths resulting from a mental illness every year.

According to the American Psychological Association, an extreme amount of stress can lead to life-threatening conditions including heart disease, cancer, cardiovascular ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide.

Despite the fact that stress and other mental issues are linked to the leading causes of death, many people shy away from discussing their mental health. Fortunately, July is the Mental Health Awareness Month, a month dedicated to helping raise awareness about mental health issues and ways to combat them.

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month is focused on promoting a wide range of ways to improve mental health through leisure time, social connection, and therapeutic animal companionship.

Here are a few ways to promote better mental health and well-being:

Maintain a healthy lifestyle and eating habit: exercise at least thrice a week as it can boost your self-esteem and help you sleep better. Eat a balanced diet to supply important nutrients to the brain to keep it healthy.

Social connection: talk about your feelings with your loved ones or close friends as it can help you feel good and deal with difficult times.

Leisure time: researchers believe that making leisure activities such as watching a movie, playing a sport, reading books etc. a priority can help keep good mental health.

Therapeutic animal companionship: emotional support animals are believed to help people cope with a wide range of mental health symptoms as well as recover from trauma.

Check your stress level: since stress is linked to heart diseases including stroke, keeping a close eye on your stress level regularly can help determine your mental and cardiovascular health. A medical professional will perform a series of stress test using a Holter monitor system or stress EKG to know the condition of your heart and mental health.

Bottom line

With July being the Mental Health Awareness Month, it seems like there has never been a better month to raise awareness about mental health conditions and ways to combat them to promote good mental health. Make sure you participate and help people experiencing stress and other mental issues around you to fight them and come out stronger.
