Deep learning, also called structured learning and hierarchical learning -- is the kind of machine intelligence used to create AIs that beat humans at games of Go and chess. It is a part of the broader field of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks, which are computer simulations patterned after a human brain.

However, several decades of research on AI have shown that it is extremely difficult to replicate the complex problem - solving and abstract thinking in the human brain. But even now, despite the enormous progress made in artificial intelligence, no current approach to AI can solve problems as the human mind does, and most experts believe that AGI is at least decades away.
