Environmental Advantages of Hydroponics

Ever heard of hydroponics? If you're not yet familiar with this modern grow medium, this article will cover the essential environmental benefits of hydroponics farming.

Hydroponics: The Definition

Hydroponics is a hydroculture subset that involves the method of growing plants not by soil but by using mineral nutrients in a water solvent.

Environmental Advantages of Hydroponics

1. The need for land space is massively reduced.

Since hydroponics does not require soil in order to grow plants, less land will be needed when farming. Planting cabbages, tomatoes, and lettuce require a significant amount of land space when it comes to traditional urban farming. On the other hand, when you are using hydroponics grow medium, you may place the plant pots closer together without affecting the growth quality of the plants.

2. More water is conserved.

Water plays a pivotal role in traditional farming. Crops need constant hydration or they will dry out and not produce maximum yield. However, with hydroponics, there is a so-called water bank or main nutrient reservoir wherein the water circulates or is fed straight to the plants.

3. The use of herbicides and pesticides is eliminated.

Spraying herbicides and pesticides is harmful to humans and the environment. These sprays, when washed away by rain, can potentially pollute our waters. Additionally, pesticides do not only kill insects and pests but can also harm other animals.

Also, when it comes to hydroponics, weed growth is almost impossible since plants take time to grow on the hydroponics method. Hydroponic growth medium does not work like soil grow medium. Thus, herbicides are not needed. Furthermore, pesticides also have no room for hydroponics since plants due to greenhouse climate control systems protect crops from extreme temperatures and pests can't penetrate.

Key Takeaway

While farming plays a vital role in bringing food to every household’s table, it is also important to consider our natural environment. With all the great benefits mentioned above, hydroponics is our next generation grow medium.
