If you are going to stay in London as a refugee, it is necessary for you to apply for asylum. In order to become eligible, it is mandatory to present your case to the law that it is not safe to live in any part of your country which is why you have left your country and cannot go back there due to fear of persecution. This persecution of fear must be related to any of the following points:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Nationality
  • Political opinion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Or anything else which puts you at risk because of the social, cultural, religious or political situation in your country.

First Note:It is important to note that if you have already claimed asylum in an EU country before your arrival in London or any part of the UK, your claim for asylum will become ineligible.

You should apply for asylum with the help of a competent asylum solicitorwhen you arrive in London or as early as you realize that it is unsafe for you to return to your home country. If you wait, your application will most likely be rejected. Your asylum solicitor will help you understand the whole claim process and make your case strong and solid in order to increase the chances of approval.

After applying for the asylum claim, a meeting with an immigration officer will be scheduled. This part of the process is called screening. Then, you will have an asylum interview with a caseworker. Generally, the decision on your application is given within six months.

Second Note:Another important thing to notice here is that you need to provide only correct information everywhere. Otherwise, you can be imprisoned for up to two years or you have to leave the UK. So, there must be no false information.

What you do while waiting for the decision

After conducting your screening i.e. the meeting with Immigration Officer, you will be told what you must do while waiting for the asylum decision. For instance, report regularly to your caseworker, which are usually called reporting meetings.

In case your situation gets changed, it is a must to inform your solicitor and the concerned authorities. While your asylum claim is being considered, you will not usually be allowed to do work. So, consult your asylum solicitor in London, if you have any doubt, any query or anything in mind to do.

What help you can get

As I have told you, you can contact a reliable asylum solicitor to make your case strong for claiming asylum. You can get help with getting a legal representative for your asylum claim and you are allowed to live in the UK while waiting for the decision.

If you are a child and don’t have any adult relative claiming for asylum, you can apply for asylum as a child on your own.
