Busting Common Myths About Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is used in treatment for different types of cancers. It involves the use of high doses of radiation to destroy cancer cells thereby shrinking tumors. Treatment outcomes are likely to improve with this form of therapy depending on the type of cancer.

Many people have varying opinions about this form of treatment and this has brought about several myths about it. Some may be understandable while some completely unfounded. Here are some common myths and the truth about them to put your mind at ease:

•    Every cancer patient requires radiation
While more than half of patients require radiation, it is determined by the cancer diagnosis. Doctors will only suggest radiation if the patient will benefit from it. It is also not introduced to the whole body as some say. Radiation is localized to the specific affected area.

•    Radiation goes with chemotherapy and they affect people the same way
Doctors may recommend the addition of chemotherapy or surgery to a treatment plan that comprises of radiation, especially when the cancer has spread. Radiation can still be effective on its own, especially for early-stage cancer. Side effects of these two therapies may have similarities depending on where the radiation is aimed at.

•    It makes you radioactive
Radiotherapy doesn’t make patients radioactive so they aren’t a danger to those around them, whether humans or pets. Sometimes doctors may ask patients to reduce their contact with others for a few days after radioactive iodine treatment. It all depends on the type of cancer and treatment plan.

Patients assume that regardless of where they go, radiotherapy remains the same. This isn’t true because patients are different and require different treatment plans. Radiation therapy must be customized for every patient to ensure the best outcomes for the patient. Cancers present differently and that makes it imperative for the patient and their overall health.
