When Is the Best Time to Get Varicose Veins Treated

Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, twisted veins that appear blue or dark purple. The cause of varicose veins occurs when blood does not flow effectively. They can cause aching, pain, and swelling, and overall discomfort. Between the appearance and the discomfort, a Utah vein treatment center is usually sought out.

Treatment options:

  • Surgery- If the varicose veins are too large, they might have to be removed surgically. This is done under general anesthetic. Surgery is usually the last option. In most cases, its same-day procedure where you will be able to go home.
  • Laser- There are laser treatments available to close off smaller varicose veins or spider veins.
  • Ligation and stripping- Ligation and stripping consist of two incisions where the vein is tied up, sealed, and then pulled out of the leg. It does not require a hospital stay and will result in bruising, bleeding, and pain.

Because most of the treatment options may result in bruising, it is recommended that the best time to have varicose vein treatment be during the colder months. Here’s why.

Compression Stockings: Have you ever heard of a compression stocking? If so, you could understand why the colder months are better to wear them. Compression stockings are proven to reduce pain and bruising that accompany varicose vein surgery. Nobody wants to wear compression stockings with shorts or swimsuits. Patients are typically advised to wear the socks for around two or four weeks afterward. They also add a layer of warmth that can make them very uncomfortable.

UV Rays:  It's best to avoid heat and UV rays. During colder months, the sun's rays are further away, making it an easier task. It is recommended to keep UV rays off of your legs for three to four weeks. Long pants, tights, and other warm clothing help to block the rays.

Relaxing: When it's snowy, wet, and cold outside, it makes it easier to relax indoors. After treatment, it's advised to spend a few days on the couch, letting your legs fully recover. Most sports and activities are put on hold during the winter months, which is good timing for treatment. Excessive force from vigorous activity can actually cause the treated veins to reopen. Walking is fine. You just need to give it enough time.

Healing: The overall most important reason to begin treatment in the fall or winter is the time it gives for your legs to heal for the summer months ahead. Feeling confident in your swimsuit that next summer is what matters most.
