Advantages of Cordless Drills as Compared to Corded Ones

The first power tool, which most people prefer to buy is, drill. And, gone are the days when the only option for people were corded drills, with best  cordless drills now fast catching the fancy of users. Given the benefits offered by cordless drills, they are slowly and gradually pushing away corded drills into the oblivion.

There are several advantages attached to corded drills, thereby making them a popular choice and option. First and foremost, corded drills serves twin purposes, one, of a drill and other of a screwdriver. And, thanks to absence of any wire or cord, these drills can be carried and used everywhere. Thanks to advanced technology, cordless drills are now available in lighter, powerful and cheaper versions. The low prices of cordless drills are reasons enough for the tool to be purchased by homeowners, apart from professionals.

The growth of popularity of cordless drills is not without valid reasons. Firstly, these drills do not come with cord limitations, making them an ideal choice for using at any place. Also, removal of cord has made these drills lighter for carrying and working. Cordless drills, which earlier made use of Nickel Cadmium (Ni- Cad) rechargeable batteries, were replaced these batteries with Nickel – Metal Hydride (Ni- MH) batteries, which are long lasting and offer higher capacity.

However, of late, even the Nickel Metal Hydride batteries have been replaced by Lithium Ion batteries, which are not only lighter in weight but also more powerful than its other two counterparts. But, Lithium Ion batteries being a bit expensive, these batteries are used in cordless drills only by professionals, with the house owners still preferring the old Ni- Cad or Ni-MH batteries. Professionals are seen carrying an extra pair of Lithium Ion batteries, with one in functional mode and other as a standby and in charging mode. Having two pairs of Lithium Ion batteries allows the professionals to carry on their work non-stop sans any breaks or hitches.

For using cordless drills as screwdrivers, one needs to ensure that, the drill is supported by a variable speed apart from reverse drive and torque control. Cordless drill, when used as a screwdriver, needs to function on low speed levels, thereby making the function of variable speed control a must in them. Torque control, post achieving a specific turning force, shuts down the drill. As far as the reverse drive is concerned, its purpose is to remove the screws.
