For those who like to be at the heart of the city the area around Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC should appear on the radar. Dominated by the world’s biggest shopping mall and the worlds tallest building (only in Dubai), Downtown features characteristic wide boulevards with trendy eateries and fashionable apartment living. Neighbouring Business Bay is a work in progress thats home to numerous office towers, retail outlets and high-rise apartments; with the newly constructed Creek extension adding enormously to the district’s appeal as it weaves its way to the waters of the Gulf. Nearby DIFC forms a stand-alone residential, business and administrative centre, punctuated with hotels and stylish restaurant options, including the popular Village Gate complex.

Eat, drink and shop
As far as shopping goes this is the place to be; if the numerous outlets inside the immensity of Dubai Mall don’t have what you’re looking for, it probably doesn’t exist. For a more ethnic shopping experience, cross the bridge to Souk Al Bahar and explore the souk-styled shops. Diners are spoilt for choice here, with the Downtown area boasting many stylish cafes and bars. Boutique eateries, like La Serre Bistro & Boulangerie, line the main Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard at ground levels; while others, notably At.Mosphere on the 122nd floor of Burj Khalifa, occupy lofty vantage points giving patrons a birds-eye view of the goings-on below. There are also al fresco dining options where patrons can watch the fountain show spectacle while they eat. There are many restaurants in Business Bay and DIFC, too. The areas numerous hotels add to the vast offering of bars, clubs and fine dining options. And for those who need some food fast, there are plenty of burgers, pizzas and shawarma places, too.

Location. Location. Location.
Visitors to the area can’t fail to spot its main focal point: Downtown sits at the base of the Burj Khalifa, which dominates the Dubai skyline. This iconic structure can be seen from pretty much anywhere in the city and from lots of places outside, too. The Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC districts lay alongside Sheikh Zayed Road on one side and are loosely bounded by Al Khail Street on the other, providing convenient access points to other parts of the city and neighbouring Emirates.

Out and about
Right, where do we start? There’s an abundance of active stuff to do, like jogging along the Creek boardwalk to nearby Safa Park, visiting Burj Park or ice-skating in Dubai Mall. Residents can enjoy cinemas, gyms, spas and even take in a performance at the new Dubai Opera venue. Alternatively, relax in the sun with a good book; many of the 5-star hotels offer day passes for residents living in an apartment buildings without a pool. Kids love a visit to Dubai Aquarium, a trip to Kidzania, taking in the view from atop the Burj (At The Top) or watching the dancing water at the famous Burj fountain shows. Dubai Metro is close by, with access points at Business Bay Metro Station, The Dubai Mall (for Downtown) and Emirates Towers (for DIFC). A number of buses operate from Dubai Mall, linking passengers to Boulevard Walk Tower, Lamcy Plaza, Design District, Gold Souk and Mall of The Emirates; and from Business Bay Metro station to Business Bay Square, Al Safa and Al Ghubaiba.

Primary to secondary
As offices and residential apartments dominate this area, there are no primary or secondary schools in Downtown, Business Bay or DIFC. However, parents can send their children by school bus to surrounding areas or drive them in. The area does have a good number of international pre-schools and nursery options, such as Blossom and Babilou Downtown Nurseries, Canadian Kids and Magnolia Nurseries in Business Bay, and Hummingbird and Grasslands Daycare centers in DIFC.
