Signs of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss occurs for a number of reasons, most of which are treatable. However, like any medical condition, the prognosis for hearing loss is better the earlier it's diagnosed. Unfortunately, hearing loss typically occurs over time, making it difficult to tell that it's happening. Thankfully, there are several easy to recognize signs that you're experiencing hearing loss in Sarasota. Here are four questions to ask yourself; answering yes indicates signs of hearing loss.

Is it difficult to hear others when you're in a crowd?

When you're having a conversation with a few people in your home, you might not have any trouble understanding them. Do you hear those same people just as well when they're right next to you in a crowded environment? One sign of hearing loss is difficulty isolating nearby noises from those in the background.

Do family members frequently ask you to turn the volume down?

Listening to the radio and watching television are great ways to pass the time. When programs are hard to hear, you likely respond by turning up the volume. If you're experiencing hearing loss, the increased volume will probably be uncomfortable to others who may ask you to turn the volume down. If you frequently find yourself in that situation, you're likely experiencing hearing loss.

Are you regularly asking people to repeat what they say?

Misunderstanding someone is different from not hearing what they say. If you ask someone to repeat themselves to better understand the context of what they said, your hearing is fine. However, if you regularly ask others to repeat what they've said or to speak louder because you didn't hear it, that's a sign of hearing loss in Bradenton.

Do you struggle to hear children's and women's voices?

Children and women naturally have voices that are higher pitches and tones than men's. Generally, when hearing loss first starts to occur, women's and children's voices become more difficult to perceive than those of men. If you're suddenly having trouble hearing what women and children are saying, then hearing loss is highly probable.

Hearing loss is a common and natural condition, which means two things. Foremost, because hearing loss is a natural condition, it's one of which you should never be ashamed. Second, treatments for hearing loss have had years to develop and become widely available. If you’re experiencing any signs of hearing loss, schedule a hearing examination with your local doctor of audiology.
