It took a dramatic sequence of events to even have a shot at the miraculous game-winning touchdown catch. As the old saying goes, it’s better to be lucky than good.

The Hall of Fame Game showed that there is money to be won and sweats to be had in NFL preseason betting even if it means watching sloppy quarterback play and rooting for a lot of players that you wont see after August.

From new coaches familiarizing their team with their schemes, young quarterbacks trying to adapt to the NFL, and other players just trying to earn a spot in the NFL, there are plenty of storylines that will shape the way we attack NFL preseason betting.

Let’s take a look at some of those as we look at the first two NFL preseason Week 1 games, both scheduled for 7 PM ET kickoffs.

The New York Jets and the New York Giants kick tradition by moving a game that is typically scheduled once every four years for Week 3 of the preseason up to Week 1 for the 2019 NFL preseason. The teams agreed to move it up because the Big Apple rivals are already slated for a Week 10 matchup during the regular season.

While NFL preseason Week 1 is “more about the players and trying to decide who our best 53 are” according to Giants head coach Pat Shurmur, Week 3 is more about implementing schemes and finding matchups. Neither team wanted to give too many secrets away to a team they’ll be facing during the regular season.

Speaking of head coaches, Pat Shurmur is 6-7 ATS (against the spread) in NFLpreseason games and Jets head coach Adam Gase is 5-7. Overs have gone 8-3-1 in Gase’s preseason games while the totals are split 6-6-1 for Shurmur.

Already, the New York Giants have suffered a handful of injuries in the early stages of training camp. Sterling Shepard broke his thumb, but should be back for the regular season. Corey Coleman wasn’t so lucky, tearing his ACL and out for the entirety of the upcoming season. Bills vs Giants Live

Injuries to the receiving core didn’t stop there. Rookie receiver Darius Slayton is listed as day-to-day with a hamstring strain.

Eli Manning is set to be the starting quarterback for the NFL regular season despite the Giants drafting Duke Blue Devil Daniel Jones to be their quarterback of the future with the No. 6 overall pick.

Shurmur hasn’t given many details regarding playing time, but he did say “a few guys that are healthy and have been practicing may not play,” according to a report from The Athletic.

Expect the Giants to get Jones, who as been indecisive on the field through the first few weeks of training camp, as much experience as possible this preseason. Other quarterbacks on the NFL preseason roster include Alex Tanney and Kyle Lauletta.

The Athletic’s Dan Duggan tracked every throw by the quarterbacks during the live 11-on-11 periods from the first nine practices. Here’s the trio’s stats:

Jets running back Le’Veon Bell won’t suit up but second-year quarterback Sam Darnold could see a series or two. Darnold is reportedly much improved this offseason, and it’s worth noting he had the highest QB rating during the last four weeks of the 2018-19 regular season. Beyond Darnold, it’ll be Trevor Siemian, Davis Webb and Luke Falk taking snaps behind center.

Siemian wasn’t good enough to keep the starting job in Denver but he has plenty of experience, which should help Jets backers during the NFL preseason. Webb went 28-for-53 and 283 yards with one touchdown and one interception during the 2018 preseason with the New York Giants.

I’m taking the New York Jets moneyline -125 (use our PointsBet promo code to get these odds) and I lean Under 33.5 (FanDuel Sportsbook promo code to get these odds).

Injuries have already taken a toll on the Giants, so I expect Shurmur to be especially conservative during week 1 of the preseason. On the other side, Adam Gase gets a second chance at being an NFL head coach and I think he’ll try set the tone early, at least more so than Shurmur.

It’s unclear how NFL-ready Jones is for the Giants. With a little more experience, I think the Jets have a slight edge at quarterback for tomorrow’s game. I’ll be betting heavy on Jets first half moneyline if it’s confirmed that Sam Darnold will, in fact, play a couple of series.

The Buffalo Bills host the Indianapolis Colts for the other 7 PM ET game. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott is 3-5 ATS in preseason games while Colts head coach Frank Reich is 4-0. The Over is 1-3 for Reich and 3-5 for McDermott.
