Sinus Conditions:

  • Sinus infection or Acute sinusitis - This condition is caused by inflammation of one or more sinus cavities due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. Symptoms of sinus infection include more mucus discharge, nasal congestion, headache, discomfort in the cheeks, forehead, and the eyes.

  • Chronic sinusitis- Different from the general type of sinusitis which is triggered by occasional or event-based infections, chronic sinusitis results from persistent inflammation of the sinuses.

  • Deviated septum- This condition occurs if the nasal septum (the wall that divides the nose) is displaced or deviated too much on one side which impedes the passage of airflow on that side, causing difficulty in breathing.

  • Hay fever ( allergic rhinitis ) - Influence of allergens like pollen, dust mites, and pet dander results in more mucus discharge from the nose as a defensive reaction along with nasal stuffiness, sneezing, and itching result.

  • Nasal polyps - These are the small growths in the nasal cavity that happen due to inflammation from asthma, chronic sinus infections, and nasal allergies (such as hay fever).

How to treat sinus infection

  • Bacterial sinusitis can be treated effectively with antibiotics.

  • In order to avoid fever, one can manage without medications by just taking proper rest.

  • Fungal infections are the major causes of chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS) which can be divided into two types - invasive and non-invasive. Non-invasive infections occur in patients who have normal immune systems whereas, an invasive fungal sinus infection can occur in people with a lower immunity level.

  • The use of steroid and saline irrigations can decrease symptoms and immunotherapy can increase the body’s tolerance to fungal exposure.

  • An invasive sinus infection may develop to become in a very short period and require immediate surgery procedures.

  • Antihistamines - These are the medicines that are used to treat Hay fever conditions.

  • Decongestants - These drugs help to lessen sinus congestion, mucus, and postnasal drip.

  • Nasal saline spray - Saline (Saltwater) nasal spray sometimes used to break dried mucus and helps to keep the nose moist.

  • Nasal steroid sprays - These drugs reduce tissue swelling and regrowth of nasal polyps after sinus surgery.

  • Nasal washes - These are used to rinse mucus from the nasal cavities and sinuses.
