How to prepare for a successful newborn session in Rochester, MN.

You’re in a new and exciting time in your life. You’ve now got this adorable, precious little soul and are ready to document his or her first memories in photographs.  Erin Young Portrait Design wants to make this a joyous experience for you and your family. I know how nerve-racking picture day is, especially when you’re running on little, to no, sleep. To help you out with this process, I’ve compiled a list of preparation tips to ease some of your stress. If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact me at erin@erinyoungphoto.com and I can get you the answers you’re looking for.

What to Bring to Your Newborn Session in Rochester Mn

I try to keep our sessions pretty basic and focused in on your new little bundle of joy and therefore take a minimalistic approach to prop usage. I will take care of the backdrops and headbands, etc., but I tend to pack light prop-wise. If there is something you’d like to include in your photos – a special outfit or blanket, a favorite stuffed animal or toy, heirlooms, etc., I will be more than happy to incorporate it in your session. The more personal items I use in your session, the more unique these photos will be to your child and your family’s personality.  We will go over all of these things in your pre-session consultation.  Keep in mind colors you love and colors you are using in your home and nursery.  As I will design sets to match and coordinate with your living space.  This makes it easy to pick out images to put on your walls at home. To ensure that your baby is happy and calm during the session, I suggest bringing a blanket that I can swaddle him or her in, as well as a pacifier. Also be sure to have fresh bottle and bring extra formula — if your child is currently using a bottle — and diapers ready to go.  Remember to lightly diaper your baby before the session so he does not have diaper lines on his body.  Feed baby as often and as much as you can the day leading up to the session, a full baby is a happy baby and he or she will photograph well.

I have a changing table area stocked full of diapers and wipes, if needed. Snacks and water are on hand also for mom and dad (and siblings too).

What to Wear for Your Newborn Session in Rochester Mn

I prefer to take the photos in just the diaper, or completely in the nude. In my opinion, babies photograph best this way and they will also cooperate longer.  There is no need to bring any outfits for the baby as I supply everything needed for the newborn session.

Plain colors photography best for newborn photos.  At my studio in Rochester I provide some wardrobe options for moms and dads.  This will all be discussed at a pre-session consult so you don’t have to think too much about what to wear and you can have it all ready to go before baby is born.
