Hemorrhoids: All About It’s Recovery & How Long Do They Last?

The swollen and irritated veins around the area of anus or rectum can last for quite a long time. In some people, hemorrhoids do clear up on their own after a few days while in other cases they can recur anytime. Some people need proper medication and procedures such as home remedies or over the counter hemorrhoid cream, to alleviate and minimize the symptoms in order to shrink hemorrhoids. They are at times extremely painful and can cause pain within simple activities such as walking or sitting for too long, making you feel utterly uncomfortable.

Duration of Hemorrhoids:

Well, there is no set duration of hemorrhoids, they might take a long time to heal and can cause a significant effect of pain along with a certain level of discomfort. It is necessary and advised to see a doctor if your hemorrhoid pain lasts for too long.

There are various factors which make it difficult for the hemorrhoids to heal or allowing them to persist for a long time. Severe risk factors associated with hemorrhoids may include:

  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Aging muscles
  • Straining while having a bowel movement
  • Overusing or abusing enemas or laxatives
  • Sitting on the toilet for too long
  • Chronic constipation or being obese

 Treatment of Hemorrhoids:

As discusses, various hemorrhoids do not require proper treatment and clear up on their own, while in other people a person needs to have a proper rest and avoid doing anything which strains and puts pressure on the anal area.

There are many such treatments which might help to work and alleviate the hemorrhoid symptoms, such as over the counter hemorrhoid cream or phenylephrine gel. This can help to relieve itching, pain and discomfort felt by the patient. Many people also feel and experience some serious complications such as visible blood in the stool, or extreme and unbearable pain. The doctor may recommend certain alternative treatments or run tests to rule out the underlying cause of your hemorrhoid.

People who experience severe hemorrhoids may need more intensive treatment, including medical procedures or surgeries. These procedures may include:

  • Rubber band ligation: This is the most common type of nonsurgical procedure performed to remove hemorrhoids. Your doctor will place a tight band, small in size around your hemorrhoids in order to cut off the circulation of the tissue, to allow it to fall off.
  • Sclerotherapy: During this procedure, your doctor will inject a chemical medication into your hemorrhoid, with an aim to shrink it. Doctors might also use heat, light, or other freezing temperatures to achieve this.
  • Surgical removal: Doctors or professionals, only recommend this type, in cases where hemorrhoids do not tend to respond at home for home remedies. Surgery is usually successful and prevents the hemorrhoids from coming back, permanently.

Recovery:

For people who get hemorrhoids regularly, there are some dietary and lifestyle changes which may help with healing and prevention.

Changes in Diet:

  • You must include fiber-rich foods in your diet as plant fibers make the stool easier and softer to pass.
  • Supplementing your diet with soluble fiber such as psyllium (Metamucil), may reduce constipation.
  • You must drink plenty of water throughout the day ensuring healthy digestion to ease constipation

Lifestyle Changes:

Making these small lifestyle changes in your everyday health can help minimize symptoms!

  • Avoiding delaying a bowel movement when the need urges to release.
  • Take regular showers.
  • Take a warm sitz bath to relieve the hemorrhoid symptoms.
  • Sitting on an ice pack in order to reduce pain or discomfort.
  • It is important to exercise daily to help stimulate bowel movement.
  • Gently wash the anus in the shower after each bowel movement while using moist toilet wipes or water from a bidet.
