As the Indian tradition goes, people mainly prefer to make sweets at home except for the Gulab jamun or the jalebi. But when it comes to barfi, nothing is better than a homemade one. This is why there are many barfi recipe (s) available online.

Certain things remain constant in the recipe of barfi and these are sugar and of course condensed milk. Barfi is nothing but the Indian form of milk fudge. There is a technique which is a must follow when you are preparing or cooking the barfi. The one and the most important thing that you should keep in mind is that the barfi should be cooked until the time it takes to become solid. Once it reaches this consistency, you can turn off the heat and let it cool down a bit. Then you can cut it into the shapes you prefer, generally, barfi(s) are cut into diamond-shaped pieces.

Some people use edible silver on top of the barfi. The name barfi came from the Persian word “barf” which means snow. The sweet is named so because initially, this sweet was made white, which is the color of the snow.

To make the simple milk barfi, the ingredients you need are powdered milk, raw milk, ghee or clarified butter, rose water and sugar. You can select your choice of nuts for the garnish.

The first thing to start with is the ghee in a pan and add the powdered milk to it. Stir well for a minute or two then add in the raw milk and stir. After a while add in the sugar and a hint of rose water to the mixture and cook it for some good seven minutes on medium heat. Do not forget to stir. Wait till the mixture to thicken and then transfer the mixture to a pan brushed with ghee. Let this cool down before you serve it.
