Must-Visit Temples When You’re on a Pilgrimage Trip to Tamil Nadu

  1.     Suchindram Temple

Suchindram is located in Kanyakumari district. It has the famous Thanumalayan Temple. The unique feature of this historic temple is that it has a statue in the inner sanctum representing three Gods, Shivan, Vishnu and Bhrama. This statue is named as Sthanumalayan. There are four musical pillars made from a single stone. There is a Hanuman statue made from single granite stone and a huge Nandhi statue. The temple has idols of nearly 30 different Hindu Gods.

  1.     Rameshwaram Temple

The Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameshwaram is a pilgrimage centre as it is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples. It is believed that the Shiva Linga of this temple was prayed to by Rama. The inner sanctum has two Lingas - Ramalinga and Vishwalinga. While Ramalinga was made by Sita, Vishwalinga was brought by Hanuman from Kailash. As per Rama’s command, Vishwalinga is worshipped first till today. This temple has the longest corridor among all the Temples in India.

  1.      Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

This temple is located in Srirangam of Trichirapalli district. Lord Vishnu is worshipped in this temple and is one among the 108 Divya Desam of Vishnu. Azhwars have praised this temple in their Divya Prabhanda. The temple includes 50 sanctums, 21 towers, many halls like 1000 pillared hall and 12 water tanks. It has Asia’s largest temple tower. The inner sanctum of Ranganatha has a golden tower over it.

  1.     Meenakshi Amman Temple

This temple is in Madurai, the Temple city of Tamilnadu. The temple is devoted to Parvathi as Meenakshi and Shivan as Sundareshwar. Even though this temple is meant to follow Shaivism, Vishnu is portrayed in many places as he is said to be the brother of Meenakshi.  It has 14 towers, two protective walls around the Temple complex, golden lotus pond and halls.

  1.     Shri Brihadeeshwarar Temple

This temple is in Tanjavur district of Tamilnadu. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. But it also includes few Vaishnavism and Shaktism cultures. The temple has a Shiva Linga in the main sanctum, also has sanctum for Nandhi, Ganesh, Chandra, Surya and many more. The Temple wall has 81 Indian classical dance poses sculptured on it. The temple also has many inscriptions in Tamil and Sanskrit.
