Why do cats make better pets than dogs?

The debate among pet owners continues unabated with one side believing that cats are the top contender for best pet and dog owners knowing that their pooches are the best! Since the RSPCA stated that 38% of Australian households own a dog, whilst only 29% own a cat, you’d think that the game was over, but you’d be wrong!

Let’s look at the plain hard facts about cats, so we can make the case that cats are the best pets in Australia!

1.    Cat owners are smarter!

A British study found that more cat owners had university degrees than dog owners and a US study found that they were more intelligent as well! However, it’s unlikely that owning a cat makes you smarter, it’s most likely because smarter people work harder and need a pet that is low maintenance and doesn’t need to be walked every day!

2.    Cat owners learn patience

All cat owners know that cats live on their own terms, so if your kids want to play with their furry friend, they simply have to wait until their cat is ready to play! Whatever helps kids learn to be patient is a bonus to parents, but having a cat as well is a double blessing.

3.    Cats don’t need much space

Just about every dog owner longs for a big back yard, so their dog can exercise themselves, but cat owners can live on the 24th floor of an apartment building and still live the high life! Cat’s don’t need hardly any space at all, because as long as they have the essentials in life, you can pretty much guarantee that your cat is a happy indoor cat.

Kerrie from Bayside Cat Resort looks after hundreds of animals every year and knows what type of space requirements cats are content with. "Our pet suites are spacious when it comes to catteries but still no bigger than a living room in a house. Yet all the cats are very happy with this amount of space, as long as they have the basics".

4.    Cats are cheaper to maintain

First of all, it’s cheaper to buy a cat than a dog, because there is a big difference in their price, even when bought from the RSPCA. Then there’s the fact that cats are smaller than their dog counterparts, so they don’t eat as much and their food bills are a lot cheaper. It also costs less to book them into a pet resort when you go on holidays and since they enjoy time on their own, cats don’t mind staying in a four star hotel for a week or two!

5.    Cats don’t bark!

If you have ever been woken at night by dogs barking in your neighbourhood then you will appreciate the silence of cats. Even the biggest dog lovers have been known to admit that it’s a very frustrating problem, because dogs bark at just about anything, day or night. In fact, barking dogs might just be one of the most common neighbourhood complaints. Of course, cats can make their own type of racket, but since its generally just a rolling purr or the occasional meow, rarely does it bother anyone.

6.    Cat’s don’t need lots of training

All dog owners know that getting a puppy is going to mean a lot of hard training for the next couple of years, something that often plays into their ownership decision. Dog owners have to be committed to training their puppy or else their pet can become totally unmanageable. On the other hand, once a kitten has been weaned, it grows into self-contained furry unit that don’t need any training, because it’s already purrfect!
