Drug Information:

Augmentin is a penicillin antibiotic.

Augmentin contains a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillins. Amoxicillin fights bacteria in the body.

Clavulanate potassium is a form of clavulanic acid, which is similar to penicillin. Clavulanate potassium fights bacteria that is often resistant to penicillins and other antibiotics.

Recommendation:

The recommended dose is 500 mg orally every 8 hours or 875 mg orally every 12 hours.

Pediatric Dose 125 mg/5 mL oral suspension: 15 mg/kg orally every 12 hours for 10 days.

Adverse effects in the nursing infant are unlikely. The manufacturer recommends caution when amoxicillin-clavulanate is administered to a nursing woman.
