A Beginners Guide to Punching Bags

Punching bags in Singapore are not only for boxers or martial artists—they are perfect for anyone who wants to build their strength and learn a few self-defense techniques. If you are new to punching bags, then this workout guide is for you.

Master the right stance:

Never throw punches mindlessly at your punching bag in Singaporeor you will risk injuring yourself. You need to know how to hit a punching bag the proper way, starting out with the basic stance. Learning this is critical as it will be the starting move for all combination punches you will do later on as you progress.

To do a right-handed stance, stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart. Your right foot should be in the back. Shift your left side forward. Bend your knees slightly, then lift the heel of your right foot. Now, bring both of your fists to your face. Always keep your knees slightly bent and your shoulders and elbows down. It will take a while before you get used to this stance, but with practice, your body will automatically remember it.

Learn the basic punches:

The four basic punches are jab, cross, hook, and uppercut. Before you move to combination punches, you must practice these basics as many times as possible until you master the proper way of doing them.

To do a jab from the right-handed stance, you just need to throw a straight punch by extending your left hand. Meanwhile, right cross punch is thrown from the chin, crossing the body towards the target in a straight line. Unlike a cross punch, a hook is executed from a vertical to a horizontal position, making it look like a semi-circular punch. Lastly, the uppercut punch is thrown in a vertical rising or upward motion, targeting the opponent's chin. Watch how-to videos online to see how these punches are done.

Punch the right way:

The most common mistake people do is to punch the bag by pushing instead of hitting. Remember that the goal is not to make the bag swing but to hit it in a snap with power. Boxing trainers call a proper punch a ‘snapping’ punch because the contact time is fast, and the arm quickly snaps back to the starting stance after hitting the target.
