How to Seal Around a Window in Your Log Home?

Posted by CTA Products Group on August 31st, 2019

If you have invested a lot of time and resources for your log home, it makes a lot of sense to ensure its longevity. Proper treatments will help preserve the wood and prevent decay-causing organisms from causing any damage down the line. Apart from taking care of your home’s exterior, consider treating entry and exit points and windows, too. That way, you can be confident in the all-around protection that will help prolong the quality and integrity of the entire home. Some products, like a log cabin wood sealer, can also be used when waterproofing windows and making sure that they are protected from damage caused by wood destroying organisms.

A good log cabin wood sealer can be an all-around product that you can also use to treat around the windows. Consider a wood preservative that is registered with the EPA and formulated to deter powder post beetles, termites, and mold on log homes and pressure-treated wood. It should have reliable water repellency and sheer trans-oxide color that will not alter or affect the original color of the wood or create a film exterior over the material, so it will not peel or crack. Look for a product that requires only one coat application, but will provide full coverage. Some formulations can penetrate deep into the wood.

Chinking or caulking are the usual methods for sealing around windows. However, these methods may not be enough, especially when there are big gaps in the wood, allowing insects and water to enter the home. For best results, invest in better caulking products and apply in an up-and-down motion, while making sure that the caulk is pressed into the crevices around the window. Remember to smooth out the application. You can do this with light household detergent. Dip a finger into it and apply it on the caulking as you smooth it out.

When you are done caulking and installing the window frame, use a log cabin wood sealer for extra protection. Make sure that the product meets all local, federal, and state VOC restrictions and that it offers superior water repellency, so it can effectively control rotting, which can be caused by moisture and water.
