An Overview of Colon Cancer Stage 4 Treatment

Posted by Coloncancer on September 2nd, 2019

Colon cancer is on its fourth stage when the final evaluation, after surgical removal, shows that it has spread to other areas in the body, like the bones, lungs, lymph nodes, and the liver. Patients diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer are believed to have few options for treatment and a low chance of survival, but some cases can still be cured. Some patients could even experience some benefits from additional colon cancer stage 4 treatment. If colon cancer is already on its fourth stage and surgery is recommended by the oncologist, determine whether surgery is done to relieve or prevent the symptoms or to cure cancer. Treatment will typically consist of targeted therapies and chemotherapy.  Some patients may also be subject to radiation therapy and immunotherapy.

People with stage 4 colon cancer can be divided into two different groups—those who have metastatic, widespread cancer that is untreatable with surgery, and those whose cancer has metastasised to one area. If the location of the metastasis is just one organ, like the liver, colon cancer stage 4 treatment can include local treatment for that particular single metastasis. Most patients with colorectal cancer in this stage have widespread or unresectable disease. In the past, the treatment results were poor. These days, there are more options for treatment, such as targeted therapies, which may help improve the outcomes.

Colon cancer stage 4 treatment may consist of radiation, targeted therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, or a combination of these methods. It is not uncommon for oncologists to use two or more treatment methods to ensure a patient’s chance of prolonged survival, or even a cure. The right combination of treatments will depend on every patient’s situation. Stage 4 colon cancer is not likely to be cured solely with surgery, but if the cancer has spread to a few small areas, it could increase your survival. Chemotherapy is also included before and after surgery, depending on the patient’s situation.
