Is Your Corporate Health Program Really Helping Your Employees?

As a business owner, your employees are your most valuable asset. After all, no matter how hard you work, you can't fully operate your company on your own. But if your people are often sick, you'll see a rise in medical costs and absenteeism. When this happens, start checking if your corporate health program is doing its part in keeping them in good shapes.

Ask yourself these questions: is the annual physical exam helping staff members understand the state of their health? Are you and your team undergoing enough diagnostic tests to prevent illnesses?

Here are several things that your wellness program should include:

The Basics and Medical History

At the very least, you should cover the basics: a head-to-toe physical examination, as well as an assessment of your employees' vision and hearing. Lab tests should include a complete blood count and urinalysis.

Have a physician review your team's medical history before all tests, so they'll know what to look out for when conducting diagnostics. It should also include an analysis of your team members' immunization records.

Imaging Technology

Many employers stop at funding the necessary tests stated above, but these don't provide your team with a complete picture of how healthy they truly are. To make your annual physical exam more comprehensive, choose a program that has the following tests:

  • Full-body CT scans to check for early signs of cancer, aneurysm, and other illnesses
  • Colonoscopies to detect gastrointestinal abnormalities
  • Bone densitometry scans (DEXA) to measure bone loss

Fitness Assessment

Being physically fit isn't defined by the absence of disease. Your employees need to know their body composition and muscle mass, too, which are indications of their strength, mobility, and balance. They should also have their aerobic capacity measured because it reflects their cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Ongoing Care

Taking care of one's body isn't an annual affair; it should be done every day. To truly empower your staff members to act, team them up with physicians who can help create a detailed roadmap for staying healthy and active. Their doctors should also be willing to answer all their questions about their physical exam results.

When you invest in a comprehensive corporate health program you'll see an improvement in your employees' wellness. It'll lead to lower medical costs, increased productivity, and a cheerier, happier workplace.
