6 Steps To Make A DIY Holiday Duvet Cover

For families, the holiday season can be a huge burden on their finances. One way to save money is by undertaking small projects around the home on your own. Making a few tweaks or adjustments to a room can really transform the overall look of the room. When it comes to the bedroom, switching out the pillows or a duvet instead can do wonders to. To make your own holiday duvet cover, you should look for holiday flat Cotton + Steel Fabric in Canada. If you’re doing this for the first time, follow these tips that help you do it yourself.

Step 1- Get the supplies

Get two flat sheets that are at least 1″ larger than your comforter dimension. You can choose either the same pattern or two different one. You’ll need a sewing machine to sew it:

  •  Straight pins and fabric scissors
  •  Snap setter and snaps
  •  1/4″ grosgrain ribbon for ties to keep the comforter in place. This can be optional.
  •  Finally, a comforter.

Step 2- Measure

There’s no strict standard for bedding sizes, so you can make any size cover. You can measure your own duvet and add allowance. Since the fabric that we buy is wide enough for a full duvet, you can mark off and cut the front and back piece.

If your duvet measures 195cm by 210m (78" by 83"). You can add 4cm (1 1/2") to the width and 9cm (3 1/2") to the length, and cut the fabric 200 cm by 220m.

Step 3- Cut the Fabric

After you have your size in place, you need to figure out how to cut up the fabric. The easy is to place the sides more effective on fabric, keeping the same direction for both.

Tip: you can consider trimming off the selvage edges of your fabric because they are tighter weave and can shrink differently than the rest of the fabric.

Step 4- Make the hem

Make sure you work on the wrong side of fabric.

  •  Mark a line 6cm/2″ along the bottom edge, fold this 6cm/2” of fabric to the inside and press.
  •  Fold up 3cm/1” to the inside and then, press again.
  •  Next, stitch hem close to the exterior fold line and again close to the interior fold line.

Follow the same on both sheets.

Step 5- Sew the three sides of the duvet

Choose either matching or contrasting colored thread and sew the three sides of the duvet cover using a sewing machine. You will leave the fourth one as you’ll need to insert in or take the comforter out.

Step 6- Add buttons

You will have options for closing up the bottom of the duvet cover. Buttons and buttonholes should be easy for you to do as the buttonhole attachments come with most sewing machines. Mark the places for buttonholes and buttons, then, sew them.

There you have it! So what are you waiting for? Look for a holiday flat Cotton + Steel Fabric in Canada and make your own duvet cover for this coming holiday season.
