The State Government has decided to form District Construction Committee to complete the construction of roads and bridges in the far-flung and Naxal affected areas of Gadchiroli district due to the initiatives of Finance Minister and Guardian Minister of Gadchiroli district, Mr. Sudhir Mungantiwar.

Gadchiroli district is the most remote and highly vulnerable Naxal affected district and 78% of the area of this district is forested. This district is marked with 38.71% Tribal population and it has 1513 villages. The geographical area of this district is very large and it has a great proportion of Tribal colonies(Pade) and villages. There is a great need to have good connectivity options to these villages. Unfortunately, this area is also influenced by Naxal activities. Due to these Naxal influences and anti-social activities, roads and bridge construction works and other fundamental facility development initiatives are getting delayed in this area.

Under the special action program in 1989, an initiative was implemented to connect villages in this area through perennial roads and bridges. Unfortunately, the work could not be completed for many years due to Naxal attacks in this area. Thereafter, the Government decided to complete Road and Bridges work by signing an agreement with Border Road Organisation (BRO). Accordingly, BRO resumed the work till 2010 and they expressed their inability to continue the work after 2010. Now, the Public Works Department has continued to work on road and bridge constructions in this area. But right now, contractors are hardly getting any positive response attheseNaxal-affected far-flung areas. As a result of this, highly Naxal-influenced areas are lacking behind in road and bridge development initiatives.

For handling this situation, the Chhattisgarh Government has constituted a District Construction Committee to address these issues. In line with this committee, the Maharashtra Government also had consideration for the formation of District Construction Committee in Gadchiroli district. Gadchiroli district collector presented this fact during district development review meeting conducted by Guardian Minister of district Mr Sudhir Mungantiwar. Guardian Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar took necessary follow-ups in this matter and accordingly, the State Government has decided to set-up District Construction Committee for Gadchiroli district.

The committee will be headed by District Collector of Gadchiroli, and it will be comprised of Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department as Commissioner and Superintendent of Police inGadchiroli, Superintendent Engineer of the Public Works Board, Senior Forest Officer of Gadchiroli, District Treasurer Officer as committee members. To sum up,the formation of the committee is an important step towards the completion of roads and bridges in these remotestNaxal-affected areas of Gadchiroli.
