Designing a Functional Bathroom for All Members of the Family

Families come in many age and ability ranges. Here are some tips on how to design a bathroom that everyone in the family can use and enjoy.

Small Children

The youngest members of the family could use some careful thought when it comes to designing a bathroom. While they will not be small for long, it is helpful to add some accommodations that can benefit them as they grow. Double vanities is a great idea for those with growing households. This way there is no monopolizing the mirror or sink, and multiple family members can get ready at the same time.

Step stools and child-sized training toilets are also good items to have on hand in a small child’s bathroom. Storage is key with kids. You can store bath toys and towels in cabinets or baskets near the tub but avoid having them above to eliminate the risk of falling objects. Removable and easily swapped items like chairs, baskets, rugs, and curtains are great ways to add kid-friendly colors and whimsical designs that are not permanent so they can be replaced as the child grows.

Elderly

Much like small children the elderly need some special attention to detail when it comes to bathroom design. Fine motor dexterity can be a challenge so levers rather than circular knobs are a better choice for faucets, doors, and cabinetry. No-slip stickers and rugs are a good idea for added safety, and grab bars or pull bars are essential.

Installing a handicap accessible bathtub is another good idea to help reduce the risk of falling and a hand-held shower head can make bathing much more convenient. Simply raising the toilet by as little as three inches can make a huge difference for seniors. You can raise the toilet itself or get a taller seat.

Disabled

Disabled individuals can benefit greatly from having a bathroom designed with their needs in mind. The level of accessibility and customization needed will depend upon the individual and what their needs are. It could be something as minimal as installing features like a chair or railing to adapt a normal shower to their convenience, or it could require a custom shower or tub design.

A handicap accessible bathtub, or curb free wet room can be great ideas to help your family member bathe with ease. Fun designs and bold colors can help add some style as well as functionality to the room to create an enjoyable space for everyone.
