The fight will be for the IBF title stripped of Canelo Alvarez on Aug. 1 after he couldn’t finalize a matchup against Derevyanchenko (13-1, 10 KOs), the mandatory challenger.

Because Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KOs), the former champion, was next in the IBF middleweight rankings, he and Derevyanchenko were required to meet.

“Everyone knows that I consider Madison Square Garden as my home away from home and there is nothing better than fighting there again. It is old school,” Golovkin said in a statement.

Citing multiple unidentified sources, ESPN reported Tuesday night that “(t)he sides had been locked for three weeks in an acrimonious negotiation before overcoming the issues and agreeing on all points.”

The two fighters’ camps had been given until Sept. 4 to agree to a fight or the IBF would order a purse bid, but they actually needed to get the deal done before that to have the fight Oct. 5, the date DAZN wanted it on and a date that Madison Square Garden was available, according to ESPN.

Golovkin reportedly preferred a third fight against Alvarez after their controversial draw in September 2017 and Golovkin’s loss by majority decision in September 2018, but Alvarez refused to face Golovkin.

DAZN, which has Alvarez and Golovkin under exclusive contract, was pressuring for the rematch this fall but Alvarez refused, according to ESPN, leading to the Golovkin-Derevyanchenko bout instead.

“I have a great deal of respect for GGG and look forward to proving in the ring that I will be up to challenge and fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a world champion,” Derevyanchenko said in a statement.

Derevyanchenko, 33, will challenge for the IBF title for the second time, having lost a split decision in October to Daniel Jacobs. Derevyanchenko into the No. 1 contender position with a points win over Jack Culcay in April in Minnesota.

A former unified middleweight champion, Golovkin, 37, is aiming to regain the IBF crown he held for three years.
