10 Movies You Need to Watch with Your Family

Posted by waqas on September 12th, 2019

A very peculiar thing about Pakistani culture is that we hardly ever watch movies together. Sure, we’ll see it individually, our kids will watch it in their private laptops, with friends, or with just one person in the family they relate to, but entire families watching movies together is unheard of these days.

There are movies out there that have a deep message, the kind that can change and leave a positive imprint on us, and may perhaps even bring some tiny changes that we all need. Additionally, you get some good hours of entertainment.

If the weekends in your house involves everyone locking themselves in their rooms, then you need to step up, arrange for a movie and some popcorns and call everyone in the common room. If it takes a movie to bring you together, then so be it. Oh, and if you need something extra to lure your kids out their cubby holes, then avail the option of online shopping in Pakistan to add that extra spark.

Here are some awesome movies that will not only make for great quality time with your family:

  •  The Lion King (1994)

If you haven’t watched this movie, watch it now! And if you have, then watch it again with your family. Why, because no matter how old the movie is, or how many times you have watched it, it moves you every single time. There’s a message there too, that no matter how privileged we are, how nice and good everything seems at the moment, it can all go away in a matter of seconds. It teaches us to stop taking people for granted, to not fall when we are betrayed in the worst way possible, and to always love and believe in yourself and learn to forgive ourselves. And of course, how can we forget the biggest lessons Timon and Pumbaa taught Simba, Hakuna Matata; it means no worries!

The movie is a tear-jerker, packing lots of emotions. The movie also had a live-action retelling just this summer. Watch the animated version first, and if you love it (which you will) then watch the live-action too for a double treat.  We suggest that your order a flash drive via online shopping in Pakistan and keep this movie safe because we guarantee you that now and then, you’ll have this intense urge to whip it out and watch it once again.

  • Mulan

Mulan is one of the most progressive movies of its time, sadly the regressive issues that existed in 1998, still exist today. The inspiring message isn’t the only thing that made Mulan such a hit and timeless movie. The humor, the brilliant songs, and the action scenes will just keep you and your family at the edge of your seats and make you pump your fist in the air when Mulan takes on the bad guys. The movie is simply perfect, the dialogues, the songs, the chemistry, and the real-time history involved in the movie makes it all the more alluring. Let us warn you though, if you watch it once, you are going to watch it several more times, and don’t blame us if you find yourself humming “let’s get down to business” at the most random moments.

Also, if you want to enjoy the songs in their full capacity, use online shopping in Pakistan to order a pair of mean speakers.

  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This movie is all the more enjoyable when you watch it after reading the book. There are colors, there are characters, there is all the magnificence surrounding the factory, and then there is Willy Wonka himself, played by the very legendary Johnny Depp. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a story of a little boy who belonged to an extremely poor but loving family. One example of that love was the fact that despite being very short on money, Charlie’s parents also took care of their respective parents under their roof. The banter between the grandparents is an extremely entertaining scene. And Charlie might not have much money, but he had the love of all his 4 grandparents. Then comes the magical announcement of Golden Tickets, and guess who’s lucky to find them? Charlie, who gets the chocolate for his birthday, and one he shared and ate in pieces. All the other winners are from extremely privileged families, so when the time came to visit the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and his plus one, grandfather stuck out like a sore thumb – only in the best way possible.

  • The Greatest Showman

This is one of those warm musicals based on the legendary showman P. T Barnum. It’s a movie where everything is just balanced. It’s extremely comfortable, entertaining, and inspiring. It is one of those movies where you can dim the lights, grab your blankets, and your popcorns and sit back and enjoy. You’ll find yourself feeling excited, strong, and really good about yourself by the end of the movie. It also has a brilliant message about being weird and different and how that makes us special. P.S. the song ‘This is Me’ is a total bop and would make you feel like spitting fire after hearing it. It talks about bullies, about harsh words, about being broken, about being ashamed of yourself, and about how all that doesn’t matter as long as you think you’re glorious. If you are in the mood for a feel-good movie which is also aesthetically very pleasing then go for it! Oh, and did we mention it stars the brilliant Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Zac Effron, and many more well-known actors?

  • Jumanji

Don’t run after the reboots and remakes, go after the original Jumanji starring Robin Williams. The 1995 classic is sure to fill you with excitement and make you jump on your couch with fear and thrill. Even if you have watched Jumanji in your childhood, don’t mind giving it a re-watch with your family. The movie follows two young kids who find a magical board game and inadvertently release something epic, a whole new world full of danger and a man (Robin Williams) who has been trapped inside the game for decades. How do the dangers stop? By finishing the game, which might or might not be a tad challenging.

  • All the Harry Potter Movies

Does a title like Harry Potter even need an introduction?  Even those who have never picked up a single book of the series or watched any one of the eight-spinoffs know what the movie is about. It’s a world, an entire magical world full of good and evil that will suck you right in and make you experience feelings you didn’t know existed. While the best way to go about it is to read the books first and then jump into the movies. If you are not into reading then enjoy the movies alone. It’s a series so if you ever got a long weekend coming up then run a movie marathon! Here’s a warning though, the later parts of the movie have some scenes have few scenes that might need parental guidance.

Akeelah and the Bee is one of the cutest films out there. It also teaches a very important lesson to the kids, about beating peer pressure and about how you need to fight for your dreams. It also teaches parents and teachers and just any adult of the brilliant things we can give the youngsters around us, support. Also, if any of the kids in your household have some troubles with spelling, this movie will motivate them to work harder and teach them that spelling could be so fun.

  • The Princess Bride

An all-time classic, the Princess Bride is a movie that is enjoyed by people of all ages. The plot sounds simple, a girl and her one true love have to meet each other.  Is it simple though? Nope!  That’s the power of storytelling this movie holds, this simple plot is suddenly unachievable because the mythical world is against these two meetings so that ensues adventures, challenges, and strange characters that light up the movie. Oh, and the ageless lines in the movie would just make you excited to quote it in real life. Sometimes all you need to relax is to watch others’ struggles that sometimes involves giants.

  • Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)

Get ready to cry your eyes out because this movie will hit you right in the feels. The movie starts slow-paced yet comfortingly and shows a wonderful normal relationship between a dog and his owner. All goes well until a tragedy hits, and you realize that this relation was anything but normal. We all think and perceive love in a way, but we can bet you never perceived love like this, so strong and so stout and so resilient. And the most wonderful about this story is that it wasn’t manmade, it was real. Hachiko the Dog is a real-life hero, who taught us humans a thing or two about love. Watch it with your family and the kids, because you can never teach them enough about love.

  • The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

There’s nothing better to get your mind off of things than a magical world with a talking lion, a transporting wardrobe, and a witch so evil and so cold, you could feel the chill in your bones as your devour the movie. Narnia is based on a fantasy book series by C. S. Lewis that follows the journey of four children during the World War II bombings. Their mother sent them to a country house so they could be safe. Little did she know that a whole another kind of war is waiting for her children, in a world that remains unseen by the rest!
