How to Install PVC Floor Tiles

Posted by Alex Monro on September 18th, 2019

PVC floor tiles are one of most popular flooring for the garage. Prior to installation, cleaning and leveling of the subfloor is recommended. This entails sweeping the area clean and patching areas where cracks, holes or voids may be that could cause your subfloor to be uneven.

Some basic tools are recommended to ensure quick and easy installation. A concrete patch, bowl for mixing the patch, a putty knife or trowel, a tape measure, a carpenters' square or yard stick, a utility knife, and a rubber mallet.

Considering the tile layout

Begin the installation process by measuring dimensions of the room to know the approximate space to cover.

These measurements can be used to help determine how much flooring will need to be ordered.

When beginning an installation there are two methods. Some start in the corner of the room and work from there. Other prefer to start in the middle of the room. Either method works.

For large areas or areas where a custom design is being used, we recommend measuring the overall length and width of the room and dividing those dimensions in two. This will allow one to locate and mark the center of the room. This is the starting point for the installation.

Putting down the first tiles

Once the center is marked and the first tile is laid, it is suggested to mark a large cross centered in the room.

Interlocking garage floor tiles are designed to lock tightly in order to prevent liquids, dirt or debris of working its way under the tiles. Having a rubber mallet handy helps the tiles lock together flush without wearing out figures.

Once the cross is complete, begin filling in the four open areas of the cross.

Cutting the tiles

After all floor tiles are in place, cut the border tiles leaving approximately a quarter inch gap between the wall and the tile.

The quarter inch space is to give the flooring room to expand and contract during large temperature changes.

Always cut the tiles so that the top finished surface is facing up. A cutting board or a piece of cardboard backing should be used to prevent damage and or dulling of the blade.

Ordered pieces can be handled in a variety of ways.

Some homeowners prefer to measure the distance between the floor and the wall and then to cut each tile individually. This method is often recommended since most garages are not perfectly square.

Other buyers cut the tile into place by folding the tile up the wall and cutting at the fold.

Many times the interlocking tabs will be lined up next to the wall. In this case the tabs can be cut off for a finished appearance. Whatever method feels more comfortable is often the best method.

Completion

Once the border pieces have all been cut and installed into the place, finish the job by installing ramp edge pieces (if these have been chosen as an accessory to the order).

PVC floor tiles are easy to keep clean and maintained once installed. The garage floor can be swept clean for loose debris and for tougher, dry stains. A general cleaner such as Formula 409 or Dawn dish detergent can be used.
