Many people say that diamonds are a woman’s best friend, and they are right. Many women today desire diamonds for their jewelry, be they on a ring or a necklace. But after getting their hands on one of these precious gems, many people wonder why the diamonds become dull over time.  What many people do not realize is that diamonds can lose their sheen if not properly maintained.

Taking care of diamonds requires paying careful attention to their overall health.  Here are a few tips to help preserve diamonds for years to come.

#1 Keeping the Diamond Clean

Keeping the pave diamond clean is critical. Make sure to handle your diamond carefully as to prevent putting it in contact with naturally occurring skin oils that occur on the hands and fingers. To properly clean a diamond, all oil must be removed from its surface.  This is easily done by soaking the diamond in an ammonia-based cleaner for a night.  This will remove residue so the diamond shines like new.

#2 While Wearing the Diamond

Take care while wearing pave diamonds.  Although the diamond is sturdy, professionals do not recommend wearing diamonds while working out or partaking in other activities that put the diamond at risk of breakage or damage.  The diamond may not break or scratch when in contact with heavy-duty materials. but excessive knocking or scrapping is not good for it either. Avoid bleach and harsh cleaners, especially while doing household chores. It is also recommended to take the diamond to a jeweler every so often for inspection.

#3 Diamond Storage

Some people only wear their diamonds for special occasions.  If not properly maintained in storage, it may not shine as it is supposed to do.  Always keep diamond jewelry, even post earrings, in a fabric-lined case or box.  More protective owners also wrap the diamonds in tissue paper for added protection (although this is not recommended for silver due to tarnishing).  Remember that diamonds can scratch softer gems, so it is important to keep them separate from other pieces.

Diamonds require special care and attention to retain their illustrious appearance.  These tips provide an overview of how to take care of diamonds, but they are no replacement for the professional guidance of an expert technician.
