People who are bed ridden, usually face embarrassing accidents like leaks that leave stains. Things like tea/coffee or juice spills, stomach flu, nosebleed, blood, urine, and other bodily fluids can get absorbed in and seep into the mattress. These things springs up in mind when buying antique single bed mattress. And since, these types of spills can happen anytime and are unavoidable for people with incontinence, here is how you can clean your mattress with set-in stains:

  • Urine stains:
  1. Dissolve 3 tablespoon of baking soda in 8 oz. of hydrogen peroxide. Add one or two drops of liquid dish soap.
  2. Dab the solution on the stain without saturating the mattress. Let dry.
  3. Make a dry foam by whisking 3 tablespoon of detergent and 1 tablespoon of water. Spread this paste on the stain and rub it for about 30 minutes.
  4. Remove the paste away and vacuum dried the paste.
  • Blood stains:

1. Make a paste by combining ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide, 1 tablespoon with liquid dish soap, and table salt.

2. Spread the paste onto the stain and allow to dry. Remove the paste after drying.

3. In case any stain is left, dab it with some hydrogen peroxide.

  • Stains from other bodily fluids:

1. Open the windows to ventilate the room.

2. Dab the stain with a undiluted, unscented household ammonia without saturating the mattress.

3. Sprinkle baking soda and let dry before vacuuming the area.

What to do next?

Moist environment feed parasites and germs. Therefore, it is important to properly dry the mattresses after cleaning. Try to keep the mattresses in sunlight for a day or half to destroy all possible infestations of bedbugs or any other parasite. Another way to protect your mattresses is to use mattress protectors. These protectors are made from plastic or rubber that do not allow fluid to seep into the mattress. Fluids that a mattress can have from bodily oils and skin flakes that can make their way through the sheets and into our mattress as well. These are available in disposable forms that can be removed easily. However, it is important to follow safe disposal practices. These fluids can cause infection and can be hazardous to others. Make sure you have provided the manufacturer with the dimensions of the mattress to get the perfect fit shield.
