As the nation certified as the land of spices with a state certified as the land of spices, you will not lack for spicy food in India. With so many varieties of spices all over the nation’s map, it’s no wonder that Indians love putting them into almost everything, except sweets. These spicy dishes will put any other cuisine you have tried to shame with how hot they can get. You will pant and sweat with every bite and still have space for more. If you have a good neighbor from the subcontinent or know an Indian outlet nearby, feel free to try out these spicy Indian fresh food in NYC.

Phaal Curry

The pride of the Indian diaspora in Britain that created it, this curry is made using bhut jolokia, the spiciest chili in the world. It’s so hot that the chefs actually use a mask while grinding the chilies and preparing the dish. The result is an even hotter dish. Milder chilies, if you can call them that, can also be used. Tomato is the main ingredient, ginger and fennel-seeds are added for taste.

Laal Maas

This meat dish literally turns red from how spicy it gets, which is where the name comes from. It is literally the warrior’s dish, enjoyed by the proud ancient warriors from Rajasthan. The dish involves a variation of red chilies from the state called mathania as whole along with other spices. Mustard oil is also used. The end result is a smoky hot red mutton that will send you to Valhalla.

Kozhi Curry

Now for something from the state called the land of spices, Kozhi curry is one of the spiciest chickens you will eat anywhere in the world. Firstly, the chicken is marinated in red chili powder giving the meat and gravy a red hue. Then, red chilies and green chilies are added for taste, always. No wonder people call Kerala the land of Gods.

Moong Dal Ki Goli

Don’t worry vegans, Indians add spicy goodness to veg dishes as well, like this ball made from a variation of lentils cooked in a gravy consisting of tomatoes, coriander leaves, onions, garlic, ginger and you guessed it, red chilli powder. This veg delight is as spicy as it is nutritious.

Chili Beef

Yet another dish from Kerala, this beef has a beef with your tongue and will burn it to ashes, along with your food pipe, stomach and all. Makes you wonder if the meat is taking its revenge on you. But the tender juicy chops with green chilies on top are worth it.

Chettinad Chicken

Kerala’s neighbors aren’t far behind on the list. This special dish from Tamil Nadu’s Chettinad district is served with strong scented ground chilies with a boiled egg on top of the chicken. Coconut and onions add extra crunch to this popular South Indian dish.

Misal

If you feel like starting your day with a burnt tongue, misal is the snack for you. Made with dry red chillies, green chilies and black pepper along with onions and other stuff, it’s the best way to get yourself fired up for the day. You can have it with buns and a sauce as well.

Rista

These lamb meatballs are first pounded into a fine paste with a wooden hammer on a wooden base before being shaped into balls and cooked with curry consisting of red chili powder, fennel seeds and other spices. It tastes best with naan and cumin rice.

Chicken 65

Another warriors’ dish, it gets its name as the 65th item on the menu of a South Indian military camp. And it takes a real soldier to finish the plate clean. The chicken is marinated with a paste made from ginger and garlic and deep fried till it turns brown. Red chilies are the main culprit behind this deep fried chicken’s hotness among other spices.

These are just some spicy Indian fresh food in NYC you can find on the menu of an Indian joint. The menu would differ based on the region the chefs come from.
