Not only Shia Muslims but Sunnis also commemorate the day of Ashura for different reasons. Today we will have a look at the history of Ashura in Islam.

Well, the has great religious and historical significance for Muslims worldwide. This is basically the annual commemoration of the murder of Hazrat Imam Hussain who was Hazrat Muhammad's grandson. He was murdered by Yazid on this day. It was a sad event that happened 1300 years ago but Muslims still commemorate this event and they feel sorrow for the murder of Hazrat Muhammad's grandson.

Hazrat Imam Husain was driven by his faith. He knew there is no chance of surviving the assault by the Umayyad army he was still taking a stand for Social Justice regardless of the results.

Shia Muslims Do not listen to any music but rather than that, sad poems are read out loud so as to recall the battle in Karbala and Martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain. They only listen to the voices who read Noha, marsiya, and soaz in memory of Hazrat Imam Hussain. Shia Muslims gather in Hussainia and imambargah which are congregation halls for Shia ritual ceremonies. These congregation halls are mostly used on this day of Ashura.

Not only Shia Muslims but all the Muslims of the world do not celebrate any joy; they don't listen to music, they don't take part in the parties or dance and even they don't plan any wedding on the day of Ashura. In fact, some Muslims practice these things for the whole month of Muharram. Moreover, there are many Muslims who fast on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram with the purpose of commemorating the sorrow that Muslims in Karbala had faced.
